  1. 1. Conformational Dynamics of Carbohydrates Studied by NMR Spectroscopy and Molecular Simulations

    Author : Jennie Östervall; Göran Widmalm; C. Allen Bush; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carbohydrates; NMR; Molecular Dynamics; Conformation; Dynamics; Residual Dipolar Couplings; Cyclodextrins; Oligosaccharides; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Abstract : Carbohydrates play important roles in biological processes. Their function is closely related to their conformation. In this thesis, conformational studies of carbohydrates by NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics computer simulations are described. READ MORE

  2. 2. True Monoliths as Separation Media : Homogeneous Gels for Electrophoresis and Electrochromatography in the Capillary and Microchip Modes

    Author : Ákos Végvári; Douglas Westerlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; capillary electrophoresis; capillary electrochromatography; gel electrophoresis; agarose; polyacrylamide; b-cyclodextrin; DNA; peptide; glutathione; drug enantiomers; microchip; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The thesis focuses on the development of new homogeneous gels for the separation of drug enantiomers, peptides, DNA and virus by electrophoresis and electrochromatography in capillaries and microchips. This type of separation media offers high resolution and small zone broadening. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the Size and Shape of Polymers and Polymer Complexes : A Computational and Light Scattering Study

    Author : Tomas Edvinsson; Terence Cosgrove; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Monte Carlo simulations; grafted polymers; shape description; folding complexity; clustering; percolation algorithm; light scattering; end-capped polymers; inclusion complexes; Fysik; Physics; Fysik; Physical Chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Detailed characterization of size and shape of polymers, and development of methods to elucidate the mechanisms behind shape transitions are central issues in this thesis. In particular we characterize grafted polymer chains under confinement in terms of the chain entanglement complexity and mean molecular size. READ MORE

  4. 4. New approaches to concentration, desalting and separation of biopolymers in capillary electrophoresis

    Author : Rong Zhang; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : In the first part of the thesis five new on-tube methods for concentration and desalting ofampholytes, such as peptides and proteins, are described in Papers I and II. The methods arebased on the fact that electrophoretic migration velocities decrease upon a decrease in theabsolute value of the zeta potential of a solute and the pore size of the electrophoresis mediumand upon an increase in the cross section of the electrophoresis chamber, the viscosity and theelectrical conductivity of the electrophoresis medium. 5. 5. NMR studies on interactions between the amyloid β peptide and selected molecules

    Author : Anna Wahlström; Astrid Gräslund; Göran Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Amyloid β peptide; Alzheimer s disease; Aggregation; Oligomer; Amyloid; Interaction; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy; Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy; Thioflavin T; Detergent; Congo red; Affibody; Cyclodextrin dimer; Metal ion; Chemistry; Kemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder linked to the amyloid β (Aβ) peptide, a 38-43 residue peptide. The detailed molecular disease mechanism(s) is (are) unknown, but oligomeric Aβ structures are proposed to be involved. READ MORE
