  1. 1. Bacterial identification by the 16S rRNA gene

    University dissertation from Department of Food Technology, Engineering and Nutrition, Lund University

    Author : Tobias Olofsson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2007]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; mykologi; virologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; bacteriology; 16S rRNA; Microbiology; Identification; Bacteria; bakteriologi;

    Abstract : The identification and classification of bacteria was initially performed with morphological methods applied on cultivated bacteria. It was not until the mid 1970s, when sequences of ribosomal RNA were discovered to be useful for bacterial evolution, that a new era started. This method showed to be far more accurate for bacterial identification. READ MORE

  2. 2. The importance of maturation factors in 30S ribosomal subunit assembly

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet, Institutionen för molekylärbiologi

    Author : Stefan Nord; Umeå universitet.; [2010]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; 30S; rRNA; RimP; RbfA; C23U; rpsE; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Cell and molecular biology Molecular biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Cell- och molekylärbiologi Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The assembly of the ribosome is a complex process that needs to be highly efficient to support maximum growth. Although the individual subunits of the ribosome can be reconstituted in vitro, such a reaction is inefficient in comparison to the assembly rate in vivo. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterization of the Intestinal Microbiota by DNA-Based Methods

    University dissertation from Department of Food Technology, Lund University

    Author : Mei Wang; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; bacteriology; virology; Microbiology; Ulcerative colitis; T-RFLP; 16S rRNA; Brachyspira; Microbiota; Bacterial diversity; Bacterial translocation; Translocating bacteria;

    Abstract : The intestinal flora and the bacteria found in the extraintestinal sites were studied in liver injury rats, with or without Lactobacillus plantarum 299v pre-treatment. The dominating intestinal flora and translocating bacteria were typed by RAPD and identified by 16S rDNA sequencing. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterisation of Food Associated Bacteria by DNA based Methods, with Special Reference to Enterobacteriaceae

    University dissertation from Division of Food Technology, Lund University

    Author : Crister Olsson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2003]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Food and drink technology; 16S rRNA; TTGE; ribotyping; Rahnella; Klebsiella; HPI; Enterobacteriaceae; food; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : The presence of genes in food, encoding some virulence factors, was studied by PCR, and species of Enterobacteriaceae, associated with food, were studied by the DNA-based methods of TTGE, ribotyping and sequencing. The flora of fresh and chill-stored pork were analysed by a culture-independent approach, using specific amplification of 16S rRNA genes followed by cloning and sequencing. READ MORE

  5. 5. Lactobacillus iners and the normal vaginal flora

    University dissertation from Linköping University Electronic Press

    Author : Tell Jakobsson; Urban Forsum; Lars Fåhraeus; Per-Göran Larsson; Ingegerd Adlerberth; [2008]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vagina; microbes; lactobacilli; phenotypic methods; molecular biology; 16S rRNA; pyrosequencing; MEDICINE Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases Microbiology Clinical bacteriology; MEDICIN Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar Mikrobiologi Klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : The ecological niche of the vagina contains a large number of different microbes that are constantly interacting with each other and the host. Culture methods have not been sufficient in order to resolve the complexity of the normal vaginal flora. READ MORE
