  1. 1. Amyloid-β and lysozyme proteotoxicity in Drosophila : Beneficial effects of lysozyme and serum amyloid P component in models of Alzheimer’s disease and lysozyme amyloidosis

    Author : Liza Bergkvist; Ann-Christin Brorsson; Katarina Kågedal; Jan Johansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In the work presented this thesis, two different conditions that are classified as protein misfolding diseases: Alzheimer's disease and lysozyme amyloidosis and proteins that could have a beneficial effect in these diseases, have been studied using Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly. The fruit fly has been used for over 100 years to study and better understand fundamental biological processes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genomic and evolutionary exploration of Asgard archaea

    Author : Eva F. Caceres; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Simonetta Gribaldo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : archaea; Asgard; eukaryogenesis; metagenomics; genome binning; phylogenetics; phylogenomics; comparative genomics; gene tree-species tree reconciliation; ancestral reconstruction; long-read metagenomics;

    Abstract : Current evolutionary theories postulate that eukaryotes emerged from the symbiosis of an archaeal host with, at least, one bacterial symbiont. However, our limited grasp of microbial diversity hampers insights into the features of the prokaryotic ancestors of eukaryotes. READ MORE

  3. 3. The role of biogas in a more sustainable energy system in Sweden

    Author : Sofia Dahlgren; Stefan Anderberg; Thomas Magnusson; Jonas Ammenberg; Mikael Lantz; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biogas; CBG; LBG; Energy users; Sustainable transitions; Sustainability assessments;

    Abstract : There are numerous problems in the world that need to be dealt with in order to achieve sustainable development. The energy system has significant negative impacts on many of these problems, and there is a need for a transition towards more sustainable energy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis : Who Are the Patients Referred to First-Line Intervention and What Happens to Them?

    Author : Kristin Gustafsson; Joanna Kvist; Ola Rolfson; Marit Eriksson; Charlotte Häger; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Background: First-line intervention to address osteoarthritis (OA) should include patient education, exercise therapy, and weight control if needed. Replacement surgery may be appropriate for patients who do not receive sufficient relief from non-surgical interventions. However, predicting the course of OA can be challenging. READ MORE

  5. 5. Membrane-Assisted Isoform ImmunoAssay : Separation and determination of protein isoforms

    Author : Maria Lönnberg; Carl G M Magnusson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; Bioengineering; Bioteknik; Surface Biotechnology; ytbioteknik;

    Abstract : Proteins exist in a variety of isoforms with minor differences, mostly due to their glycosylation patterns, which can modulate their biological functions. It seems to be of clinical relevance to measure the isoform-distribution.Thesis describes a novel technology named Membrane-Assisted Isoform ImmunoAssay (MAIIA). READ MORE
