1. Influence of hydrochemical parameters on the mobility and redistribution of metals from a mine waste deposit
Abstract : The aim of the research presented in this thesis has been to combine theoretical and empirical methods to describe chemical attenuation of trace metals (i.e. Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn) in a polluted watershed. It was possible to elucidate the major mechanisms by using the naturalvariations of chemical composition of the system. READ MORE

2. Phosphate and Arsenic Cycling under Experimental Early Proterozoic Marine Conditions
Abstract : Nutrient dynamics in the Archean-Paleoproterozoic oceans strongly influenced primary productivity and the rise of atmospheric O2. Reconstructing the cycling of key nutrients such as dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) at this time is important for our understanding of the timing, rate and extent of atmospheric oxygenation at this time. 3. Polyethylene – metal oxide particle nanocomposites for future HVDC cable insulation : From interface tailoring to designed performance
Abstract : Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) nanocomposites containing metal oxide nanoparticles are considered as promising candidates for insulating materials in future high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cables. The significant improvement in dielectric properties compared with unfilled polymer is attributed to the large and active interface between the nanoparticles and the polymer. READ MORE

4. Structure formation at solid/liquid interfaces : Understanding self-assembly and environmental challenges
Abstract : The work described in the present dissertation has explored the structure of particles and molecules at solid/liquid interfaces, aiming to understand the physics of self-organizing systems and use this knowledge to address some environmental issues. Surface-sensitive neutron scattering techniques, such as reflectometry and grazing incidence small angle scattering, have been used as the primary tool to investigate structures in proximity to an interface. 5. Charge Development at Iron Oxyhydroxide Surfaces : The Interplay between Surface Structure, Particle Morphology and Counterion Identity
Abstract : Iron (oxyhydr)oxide (FeOOH) minerals play important roles in various natural, technological and societal settings. The widespread abundance of these minerals has prompted numerous studies on their surface reactivity in aqueous media. Surface charge development, one that namely takes place through the adsorption of potential determining ions (p.d. READ MORE
