16. Retinal tumorigenesis and neurodegeneration : strategies to promote tumor cell death and support retinal cell survival to preserve vision
Abstract : Our vision is central to our quality of life enabling us to interact with our environment and lead productive lives. The ability to see begins in the retina, one of the paramount features of the eye, as it takes on the task of converting light signals to nerve impulses that are relayed to the visual centers of the brain. 17. Transcriptional regulation by the thyroid hormone receptor and its viral counterpart : the P75gag-V-erbA oncoprotein
Abstract : Thyroid hormone binds to specific DNA binding receptors (TRs) in the cell nucleus and thus regulates transcription during development and in some pathological disorders. The gene of the viral TR homologue, v-erbA, is one of two oncogenes encoded in the genome of avian erythroblastosis virus (AEV). READ MORE

18. Development of benzoquinoquinoxaline derivatives as triplex-specific probes : Recognition of DNA structures at repeats sequences
Abstract : Repeat sequences are associated with several human diseases, such as Friedreich’s ataxia, polycystic kidney disease and cancer. These sequences can form non-B-DNA structures, including triplex (H-DNA) DNA, and are associated with genomic instability and altered gene expression. READ MORE

19. Nitration of Oxo-pyramidines and Oxo-imidazoles
Abstract : This thesis is mainly focused on the reactions of oxo-pyrimidines and oxo-imidazoles with nitric acid in sulfuric acid and properties of the gem-dinitro products formed in this process. Low temperature nitrations of 2-methylimidazoles produced – in addition to the known 2-methyl-5(4)-nitroimidazole – 2-(dinitromethylene)-5,5-dinitro-4-imidazolidinone and parabanic acid. READ MORE

20. Quantum Chemical Studies of Protein-Bound Chromophores, UV-Light Induced DNA Damages, and Lignin Formation
Abstract : Quantum chemical methods have been used to provide a better understanding of the photochemistry of astaxanthin and phytochromobilin; the photoenzymic repair of UV-light induced DNA damages; and the formation of lignin. The carotenoid astaxanthin (AXT) is responsible for the colouration of lobster shell. READ MORE
