1. Mononuclear Ruthenium Complexes that Catalyze Water to Dioxgen Oxidation
Abstract : The theme of this thesis is the development of mononuclear Ru-based complexes that are capable of catalyzing the water oxidation (or O2-evolving) reaction, e.g. 2 H2O → O2 + 4 H+ + 4 e−. Several families of mononuclear Ru water oxidation catalysts were designed and prepared. READ MORE

2. New Methods for the Synthesis of Vicinal Stereocenters : Palladium-Catalyzed Domino Reactions and Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation
Abstract : In this thesis the synthesis of vicinal stereocenters is investigated in two distinct contexts, namely the construction of 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles and the synthesis of b-hydroxy-a-amino acids. Both scaffolds are prevalent in a range of natural products and biologically relevant compounds and, therefore, methods for their synthesis are of great import. READ MORE

3. Multiplex HLA-DR-DQ genotyping : for genetic epidemiology and clinical risk assessment
Abstract : The human leukocyte antigens (HLA) are highly polymorphic cell surface proteins encoded in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region on chromosome 6. The HLA system has been well known as transplantation antigens but the primary biological role of the HLA molecules is regulation of immune response by presenting peptide fragments to T-lymphocytes. 4. Methods for Synchrophasor-Based Power SystemInstability Detection and HVDC Control
Abstract : The recent availability Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) functionalities in relay technology has opened up new opportunities for power system protection, allowing this microprocessor-based technology to be used beyond traditional protection purposes. This technology now also considers the computation and communication mechanisms that allow the transmission of synchronized phasor measurements. READ MORE

5. DNA Sequence Variants in Human Autoimmune Diseases
Abstract : Human autoimmune diseases are hallmarked by inappropriate loss-of-tolerance and self-attacking response of the immune system. Studies included in this thesis are focusing on the implication and functional impact of genetic factors in three autoimmune diseases rheumatoid arthritis (RA), asthma, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
