  1. 1. Development and three-dimensional histology of vertebrate dermal fin spines

    Author : Anna Jerve; Per Erik Ahlberg; Martin Brazeau; Tatjana Haitina; Philippe Janvier; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fin spine; paleontology; early vertebrate; histology; development; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Organismal Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär organismbiologi;

    Abstract : Jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes) consist of two clades with living representatives, the chondricthyans (cartilaginous fish including sharks, rays, and chimaeras) and the osteichthyans (bony fish and tetrapods), and two fossil groups, the "placoderms" and "acanthodians". These extinct forms were thought to be monophyletic, but are now considered to be paraphyletic partly due to the discovery of early chondrichthyans and osteichthyans with characters that had been previously used to define them. 2. 2. Microcirculation in tissue repair - from microsurgery to 3D bioprinting

    Author : Matteo Amoroso; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microsurgery; 3D bioprinting;

    Abstract : Microsurgical reconstruction is challenged by two main shortcomings: Perfusion Related Complication (PRC) and donor site morbidity. In the first 3 studies of this thesis, we aimed to provide solutions to PRC-problems, investigating hemodilution as a tool able to increase blood flow in flap microcirculation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Long bone growth and evolution revealed by three-dimensional imaging

    Author : Jordi Estefa; Sophie Sanchez; Per Ahlberg; Holly Woodward; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D histology; hematopoiesis; humerus; tetrapods; Biologi; Biology;

    Abstract : Propagation phase-contrast synchrotron radiation microtomography is a non-destructive method used for studying histology in three dimensions (3D). Using it, the 3D organization of the diaphyseal cortical vascularization in the humerus of two seymouriamorphs was analyzed in this thesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bioengineering and Cell-derived Strategies for Salivary Gland Regeneration

    Author : Jiao DONG; Lungbioengineering och regeneration; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; extracellular vesicles; precision-cut tissue slices; histology scoring; sustainable histology; salivary gland; human dental pulp stem cells; extracellulära vesiklar; stamceller från mänsklig tandmassa; precisionsskurna vävnadsskivor; Spottkörtel; hållbar histologi och histologipoäng;

    Abstract : Xerostomia (dry mouth symptoms) is a group of incurable debilitating conditions of salivary glands caused by aging, radiation/chemical exposure, or aberrant inflammation in the salivary glands. During this PhD thesis, we aimed to evaluate whether cell-derived strategies (e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. Digital Image Analysis of Cells : Applications in 2D, 3D and Time

    Author : Amalka Pinidiyaarachchi; Carolina Wählby; Ewert Bengtsson; Arvid Lundervold; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Digital image analysis; microscopy; fluorescent staining; watershed segmentation; sub-cellular localization; point-like signals; wavelets; cell confluence; cytology; color spaces.; Image analysis; Bildanalys;

    Abstract : Light microscopes are essential research tools in biology and medicine. Cell and tissue staining methods have improved immensely over the years and microscopes are now equipped with digital image acquisition capabilities. The image data produced require development of specialized analysis methods. READ MORE
