1. Serotonergic receptor subtypes in learning and memory : focus on 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B and 5-HT2A receptors
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study how serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtypes can influence hippocampus/amygdala-dependent teaming and memory using the water maze (WM) and the passive avoidance (PA) tasks in rodents, and to provide a cellular correlate to the behavioral results using histochemical methods. Glutamatergic neurons in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus are believed to be important for spatial teaming and memory as well as synaptic plasticity. READ MORE

2. Modulation of acetylcholine release by serotonergic 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors : a microdialysis study in the awake rat
Abstract : The aim of the thesis was to investigate the effects of the 5-HT1A receptor antagonist robalzotan (NAD-299) and the 5-HT1B receptor antagonist NAS-181 ((R)-(+)-2-(3-morpholinomethyl-2Hchromen-8-yl) oxymethyl-morpholine methanesulfonate) on cholinergic, glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission in the rat brain in vivo. The extracellular levels of acetylcholine (ACh), glutamate (Glu) and GABA were monitored by microdialysis in the frontal cortex (FC) and ventral hippocampus (VHipp) in separate groups of awake rats. 3. 5-HT1A receptor ligands with putative antidepressant activity : pharmacological studies in the rat
Abstract : Several studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)IA receptor agonists possess antidepressant activity. Probably these agents exert their therapeutic effect through stimulation of postsynaptic 5-HT,A receptors. READ MORE

4. Development of radioligands for the serotonergic neurotransmission system for use in positron emission tomography
Abstract : The serotonergic system is implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. Several hypotheses on the pathophysiology of these disorders are based on the pharmacology of serotonergic drugs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely used for the treatment of depression and anxiety. READ MORE

5. Distribution of serotonin receptors and transporters in the human brain : implications for psychosis
Abstract : The serotonin (5-HT) system is thought to be involved in different psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety disorders, and is a major target for the pharmacological treatment of these conditions. The involvement of the 5-HT system in psychosis has been suggested, as 5-HT receptor agonism is a common mechanism of different classes of hallucinogenic drugs and several antipsychotics are 5-HT receptor antagonists.
