1. Tissue remodelling in pulmonary fibrosis linked to 5-HT2 receptor activation
Abstract : After an injury, an immediate reparative response is triggered to replace the damaged tissue, however, in fibrosis, cells remain active despite wound resolution causing a steady build-up of fibrotic tissue. In pulmonary fibrosis, there is a constant regeneration and remodelling of lung tissue where the thin architecture of alveoli become thickened, hampering efficient diffusion of oxygen, as seen in diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). 2. Direct and endothelium-linked serotonergic control of vascular tone in human uterine and umbilical arteries
Abstract : The serotonergic vascular control was investigated by in vitro pharmacology in the human uterine and umbilical arteries. The localisation of immunoreactive (IR) neuropeptide Y (NPY) and the influence of NPY on the adrenergic vascular effects in the human uterine artery were also studied. READ MORE

3. Reactivity of human omental blood vessels. Effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine, substance P and the intravenous anaesthetic propofol
Abstract : Regulation of blood flow involves several endogenous substances and mechanisms, and exogenous substances may also affect the blood flow. In the present thesis, human omental blood vessels were investigated in vitro concerning (i) characteristics of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors; (ii) mediators of substance P (SP)-induced relaxation; (iii) direct and indirect (via effects on sympathetic neurotransmission) effects of the intravenous anaesthetic propofol. 4. Serotonergic and steroidal influences on impulsive behaviour in rats
Abstract : Impulsiveness is a trait contributing to the personality of all human beings to a greater and lesser extent. In a pathological form it can lead to impulsive behaviour which is an important component of many psychiatric and neurological disorders. READ MORE

5. Studies on Premenstrual Dysphoria
Abstract : Premenstrual dysphoria, so severe that it affects the lives of the women afflicted, is the condition studied in this thesis. Physiological and pharmacological mechanisms of pathogenetic relevance were investigated. READ MORE
