  1. 1. 5-HT2A : a serotonin receptor with a possible role in joint diseases

    Author : Anders Kling; Solbritt Rantapää-Dahlqvist; Carl-Olav Stiller; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 5-HT2A serotonin receptor; serotonin; rheumatoid arthritis; adverse drug reaction; HTR2A; glucocorticoids; klinisk farmakologi; Clinical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : BackgroundSerotonin (5-HT), an amino acid derivative and neurotransmitter, has for long been studied in relation to inflammation. It is an endogenous ligand for several different types of serotonin receptors. The serotonin receptor 5-HT2A has been reported to have a role in the pathophysiology of arthritis in animal experiment models. READ MORE

  2. 2. Serotonergic receptor subtypes in learning and memory : focus on 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B and 5-HT2A receptors

    Author : Maria Lüttgen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Serotonin; 5-HT1A receptor; 5-HT1B receptor; 5-HT2A receptor; acetylcholine; NMDA receptor; water maze; passive avoidance; septum; hippocampus; teaming; memory; immunohistochemistry; mRNA;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study how serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtypes can influence hippocampus/amygdala-dependent teaming and memory using the water maze (WM) and the passive avoidance (PA) tasks in rodents, and to provide a cellular correlate to the behavioral results using histochemical methods. Glutamatergic neurons in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus are believed to be important for spatial teaming and memory as well as synaptic plasticity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of positron emission tomography radioligands for the dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission systems

    Author : Camilla Lundkvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : PET; Radioligand; Dopamine transporter; Serotonin transporter; 5-HT1A receptor; 5-HT2A receptor;

    Abstract : The dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission systems are of central interest in relation to several neuropsychiatric disorders. The main objectives were to develop new suitable radioligands for positron emission tomography (PET) examinations of the dopamine transporter (DAT) as well as the serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A-receptors. 4. 4. Positron emission tomography in serotonergic drug development

    Author : Bengt Andrée; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : PET; 5-HT1A receptors; 5-HT2A receptors; D2 dopamine receptors; antidepressive drugs; antipsychotic drugs; pindolol; NAD-299; S 16924; ORG 5222; M100907; WAY; DWAY;

    Abstract : The serotonin neurotransmission system has a central role in drug treatment of depression and anxiety and is also discussed in relation to treatment of schizophrenia. The benefits of presently available drugs are however limited by partial of poor response and side effects. READ MORE

  5. 5. Serotonin in Fear and Anxiety

    Author : S Melker Hagsäter; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; serotonin; anxiety; fear; SSRI; IBS;

    Abstract : That the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) has a central role in fear and anxiety is supported by numerous experimental and clinical studies. Arguably the most illustrative example is the effect of serotonergic-acting drugs, and in particular the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
