  1. 1. Towards SDN/NFV-based Mobile Packet Core : Benefits, Challenges, and Potential Solutions

    Author : Van-Giang Nguyen; Anna Brunström; Karl-Johan Grinnemo; Javid Taheri; Kurt Tutschku; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mobile packet core; evolved packet core; SDN; NFV; 5G; scalability; load balancing; control plane; open5Gcore; Computer Science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : In mobile networks, the mobile core plays a crucial role in providing connectivity between mobile user devices and external packet data networks such as the Internet. Through the years, along with the dramatical changes in radio access networks, the mobile core has also been evolved from being a circuit-based analog telephony system in its first generation (1G) to become a purely packet-based network called the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) in the current generation (4G). 2. 2. Towards a Scalable and Low-Latency Softwarized Mobile Packet Core Network

    Author : Van-Giang Nguyen; Anna Brunström; Karl-Johan Grinnemo; Javid Taheri; Christian Esteve Rothenberg; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mobile Packet Core; Evolved Packet Core; 5G; SDN; NFV; Scalability; Control Plane; User Plane; MME; UPF; VPP; Load Balancing; Auto-Scaling; Time-Critical; Low-Latency; Smart Grid; GOOSE; Computer Science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : The mobile packet core – a central part of the overall mobile cellular network – has a long history of evolution. Through the years, its architecture has been drastically changed to meet the demand coming from the fast growth in the number of devices as well as the introduction of new types of applications and services. Abstract : The advent of 5th generation of mobile networks (5G) will introduce new challenges for the infrastructure providers (InPs). One of the major challenges is to provide a common platform for supporting a large variety of services. READ MORE

  4. 4. 5G Backhauling with Software-defined Wireless Mesh Networks

    Author : Ricardo Santos; Andreas Kassler; Rui L. Agar; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SDN; wireless backhaul; heterogeneous networks; mmWave; 5G; resiliency; Computer Science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : Current technological advances have caused an exponential growth of the number of mobile Internet-connected devices, along with their respective traffic demands. To cope with this increase of traffic demands, fifth generation (5G) network architectures will need to provide multi-gigabit capacity at the access base stations (BSs), through the deployment of ultra-dense small cells (SCs) operating with millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies, e. 5. 5. Agile, Resilient and Cost-efficient Mobile Backhaul Networks

    Author : Forough Yaghoubi; Lena Wosinska; Marija Furdek; Jiajia Chen; Amitava Mukherjee; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; 5G; software defined networking; rain disturbance; technoeconomic framework; network consistency.; Informations- och kommunikationsteknik; Information and Communication Technology;

    Abstract : The exponentially increasing traffic demand for mobile services requires innovative solutions in both access and backhaul segments of 5th generation (5G) mobile networks. Although, heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are a promising solution for the wireless access, the backhaul segment has received considerably less attention and falls short in meeting the stringent requirements of 5G in terms of capacity and availability.
