  1. 1. Engineering superconducting qubits : towards a quantum machine

    Author : Joachim Sjöstrand; Anders Karlhede; Denis Vion; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : A quantum computer is an information processing machine, much like an ordinary classical computer, but its function is based on quantum mechanical principles. To be able to construct such a machine would be a fantastic accomplishment---to have total control over a quantum system is a dream for both physicists and science-fiction enthusiasts. READ MORE

  2. 2. Non-abelian quantum Hall states and fractional charges in one dimension

    Author : Emma Wikberg; Anders Karlhede; Edwin Langmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : The fractional quantum Hall effect has, since its discovery around 30 years ago, been a vivid field of research—both experimentally and theoretically. In this thesis we investigate certain non-abelian quantum Hall states by mapping the two-dimensional system onto a thin torus, where the problem becomes effectively one-dimensional and hopping is suppressed, meaning that the classical electrostatic interaction dominates. 3. 3. One-dimensional theory of the quantum Hall system

    Author : Emil Johansson Bergholtz; Anders Karlhede; Nicholas Read; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fractional quantum Hall effect; thin torus; spin chains; conformal field theory; strong correlations; non-abelian states; Condensed matter physics; Kondenserade materiens fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : The quantum Hall (QH) system---cold electrons in two dimensions in a perpendicular magnetic field---is a striking example of a system where unexpected phenomena emerge at low energies. The low-energy physics of this system is effectively one-dimensional due to the magnetic field. READ MORE

  4. 4. Correlations in Frustrated Magnets : Classical and Quantum Aspects

    Author : Sergei Isakov; Anders Karlhede; Frederic Mila; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we study three different aspects of the physics of frustrated magnets. First, we study the interplay of thermal and quantum fluctuations in the transverse field frustrated Ising model on the triangular lattice. READ MORE

  5. 5. Perturbative Methods in General Relativity

    Author : Daniel Eriksson; Michael Bradley; Gert Brodin; Lászlo Árpád Gergely; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; General relativity; perturbation theory; photon-photon scattering; cosmology; FRW models with cosmological constant; Bianchi type V; slowly rotating stars; Hartle formalism; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Einstein's theory of general relativity is a cornerstone in the process of gaining increased understanding about problems of gravitational nature. It can be applied to problems on the huge length scales of cosmology and as far as we know it does not break down before the Planck scale is approached. READ MORE
