  1. 21. Aspects of Regulation of GFR and Tubular Function in the Diabetic Kidney : Roles of Adenosine, Nitric Oxide and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Patrik Persson; Fredrik Palm; Peter Hansell; Bengt Rippe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; glomerular filtration rate; renal blood flow; insulin; renal hemodynamics; micropuncture; oxygen; NADPH-oxidase; apocynin; streptozotocin; l-arginine; CGS21680; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Diabetic nephropathy is the main cause for initiation of renal replacement therapy and early symptoms in patients include increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), decreased oxygen tension and albuminuria, followed by a progressive decline in GFR and loss of kidney function. Experimental models of diabetes display increased GFR, decreased tissue oxygenation and nitric oxide bioavailability. READ MORE

  2. 22. Inflammation, caffeine and adenosine in neonatal hypoxic ischemic brain injury

    Author : Max Winerdal; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Brain injury during the neonatal period has potentially lifelong consequences for a child. Perinatal infections and inflammation can induce preterm birth and unfavorable cognitive development, Thus inflammation has received enthusiastic interest for potential therapeutic approaches seeking to protect the newborn brain. 3. 23. Experimental inhibition of proliferative retinopathy

    Author : Sylvia Almlöf Sarman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Retinal ischemic diseases like retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), diabetic retinopathy (DRP) and retinal vein occlusion, with preretinal neovascularization (angiogenesis) that may lead to vitreous hemorrhages and retinal detachment with subsequent vision loss and blindness is a global health problem. By analyzing the potential role of molecules acting at different levels of the angiogenic cascade the presented studies aimed to widen our understanding of retinal ischemic diseases on a molecular, cellular and morphologic level. 4. 24. Modeling Biochemical Network Involved in Striatal Dopamine Signaling

    Author : Anu G. Nair; Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; Omar Gutierrez Arenas; Upinder Singh Bhalla; Jakob Kisbye Dreyer; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dopamine signaling; Striatum; Reward learning; Acetylcholine; Mass-action modeling; FRET biosensor; Adenosine; Eligibility trace; Computer Science; Datalogi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I studied the molecular integration of reward-learning related neuromodulatory inputs by striatal medium-sized projection neurons (MSNs) using mass-action kinetic modeling.It is known that, in reward learning, an unexpected reward results in transient elevation in dopamine (peak) whereas omission of an expected reward leads to transient dopamine decrease (dip). 5. 25. Molecular mechanisms underlying the actions of psychoactive drugs in the basal ganglia : focus on cannabinoids and morphine

    Author : Anders Borgkvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis is centered on the identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in the psychomotor effects of cannabinoids and morphine. These drugs share the ability of acting at the level of the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical structures involved in the control of locomotion, as well as in cognitive and motivational aspects of motor function.
