1. Molecular Genetic Studies of Ph-positive Leukemias and the BCR and ABL Genes
Abstract : In the present thesis molecular genetic methods were used to address different biological and clinical aspects of Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-positive leukemias and the BCR and ABL genes. In the first study, children with Ph-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) were found to have essentially the same breakpoint locations in BCR as adults, a pattern which differs from the one seen in Ph-positive acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). 3. Molecular Monitoring of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Treated with Imatinib Mesylate
Abstract : The BCR-ABL fusion gene product is a constitutively activated tyrosine kinase, which is fundamental in the pathogenesis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Imatinib mesylate (imatinib, Glivec® or Gleevec®), a small molecule inhibitor of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, is now the first-line treatment for all newly diagnosed chronic phase CML patients. 4. Molecular and functional studies of the BCR/ABL1 fusion gene
Abstract : The BCR/ABL1 fusion gene is associated with chronic myeloid leukemia and a subgroup of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The general aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of BCR/ABL1-induced leukemogenesis by molecular and functional studies of this fusion gene. READ MORE

5. Studies of leukotriene C4 synthase expression and regulation in chronic myeloid leukaemia
Abstract : Leukotriene (LT) C4 is generated through conjugation of LTA4 with glutathione by the actions of leukotriene C4 synthase (LTC4S). This biologically potent mediator of asthma and inflammation has also been suggested to play a regulatory role in human myelopoiesis and is overproduced by blood and bone marrow cells from patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).
