6. A study of potassium channel activation as a pharmacological principle for vasodilation of cerebral blood vessels
Abstract : Increasing [K+]o is intimately coupled to progressive ischemia and reduced CBF. In isolated cerebral and mesenteric arteries, it was found that significant differences in the vascular responses to [K+]o exist. Among the species studied, human cerebral arteries were the most sensitive artery to increasing [K+]o. READ MORE

7. Role of inositol pyrophosphates in pancreatic beta cell function
Abstract : Inositol pyrophosphates are high energy diphosphate containing molecules that are ubiquitous in eukaryotic cells. They have been implicated in diverse cellular processes ranging from DNA repair, telomere length regulation, ribosome synthesis, cell cycle regulation and apoptosis to osmoregulation, phosphate homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, vesicle trafficking, cytoskeletal rearrangement and exocytosis. 8. Cellular Pharmacology of the Novel Antitumoural Cyanoguanidine CHS 828
Abstract : The antitumoural cyanoguanidine CHS 828 has shown promising activity in a number of preclinical and clinical studies. However, the mechanisms underlying the cell death induced by CHS 828 has not been clarified. This thesis describes in vitro studies of the cellular pharmacology of CHS 828. READ MORE

9. Regulatory Functions of the Juxtaglomerular Apparatus
Abstract : The tubuloglomerular feedback mechanism is an important regulator in the juxtaglomerular apparatus and it detects flow dependent alterations in luminal NaCl concentration ([NaCl]) at the macula densa (MD) cell site via a Na+-K+-2Cl cotransporter. Signals are sent by the MD to adjust the afferent arteriole tone and altering release of renin. READ MORE

10. Cell signaling and regulation of smooth muscle contraction from a physiological and a pathophysiological perspective
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to examine the cell signaling and regulation of smooth muscle in different smooth muscle tissues and under pathophysiological conditions. The thesis is based on 4 papers and the experimental work is based on in vitro studies in mouse. READ MORE
