  1. 6. HIV-2 and SIV vaccine studies in macaques : with emphasis on humoral immune responses

    Author : Charlotta Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Vaccines; HIV-2; SIV; macaques; adjuvant; immune response; antibodies; neutralising antibodies; cell-mediated immunity; T-cell proliferation; CTL;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the evaluation of HIV vaccines candidates in the HIV-2 or SIV monkey models. The immunogenicity and protective efficacy of the vaccines were investigated. Furthermore, correlates to protective immunity were sought. READ MORE

  2. 7. HIV-1 evolution, disease progression and molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 single and HIV-1 and HIV-2 dual-infected individuals in Guinea-Bissau

    Author : Joakim Esbjörnsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; Guinea-Bissau; subtype; disease progression; evolution; coreceptor tropism; CXCR4; gp120; V1-V3; CD4%; CD8%; soluble immune markers;

    Abstract : The two genetically related human lentiviruses known today, HIV-1 (which is pandemic) and HIV-2 (which mainly is confined to West Africa), are the causative agents of AIDS. Progressive immune dysfunction and AIDS develop in most cases of untreated HIV-1 infection, but only in approximately 25-30% of HIV-2 infected individuals. READ MORE

  3. 8. Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses

    Author : Gülsen Özkaya Sahin; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; SIV; envelope; neutralizing antibody; breadth; potency; IgG; IgA; complement; antibody-dependent complement-mediated inactivation; virus evolution; diversity; divergence;

    Abstract : Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimulation, the preservation of CD4+ T and B cells, the conformation of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env), and the evolution of Env during infection. 4. 9. Concepts in DNA immunization overcoming viral diversity and enhancing plasmid immunogenicity

    Author : Erik Rollman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV; DNA-vaccine; gp 160; GM-CSF; HPV 16 L OBS I; MuLV; prime-boost;

    Abstract : On April 23, 1984, the prominent scientist Robert Gallo held a historical press conference at the Department of Health and Human Services, Washington D.C., USA. He announced that his laboratory at the National Institutes of Health had over the last months isolated a retrovirus named Human T-cell Leukemia Virus type III (HTLV-III). READ MORE

  5. 10. The role of adjuvant-induced innate immune activation in shaping vaccine responses

    Author : Elizabeth A Thompson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Adjuvants are components added to non-live vaccine formulations to enhance the effect of the vaccine by alerting the immune system to initiate a response against the vaccine. Powerful new adjuvants will be critical for the development of next generation vaccines to diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV-1/AIDS, malaria, and therapeutic cancer vaccines. READ MORE
