  1. 1. Exhaled markers of oxidative stress in the airways

    Author : Mona Lärstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : exhaled air; exhaled breath condensate; malondialdehyde; 3-nitrotyrosine; ethane; pentane; isoprene; oxidative stress; airways; inflammation;

    Abstract : Breath contains a number of different molecules, some of which may have potential use as markers for oxidative stress in the airways during chronic airway inflammation. The major objectives were to develop and validate methods for quantifying five potential exhaled markers of oxidative stress: malondialdehyde (MDA) and free 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and ethane, pentane and isoprene in exhaled air, and to test the applicability of the methods. 2. 2. The IL-23 axis and innate immunity in the airways

    Author : Marit Stockfelt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IL-23; airways;

    Abstract : The Interleukin-23 (IL-23) axis is a communication system that integrates innate and adaptive immunity. When triggered by microbial stimuli, antigen presenting cells can secrete the cytokine IL-23, leading to the production of IL-17 and IL-22. READ MORE

  3. 3. Exploring small airways using breath analyses

    Author : Emilia Viklund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; exhaled particles; small airways; alveolar nitric oxide; SARS-CoV-2; birch pollen; smoking; lining fluid;

    Abstract : Background: Airway irritants such as allergens, tobacco smoke and viruses may cause damage in the small airways, usually undetected with routine diagnostic methods. Analyses of endogenously produced nitric oxide (NO) and endogenously produced small droplets (i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Revisiting cell specification and differentiation in the Drosophila airways, an insect organ homologous to our lung and blood vessels

    Author : Ryo Matsuda; Christos Samakovlis; Payre Francois; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cell differentiation; airways; Drosophila; cell signaling; transcription factors; utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : Oxygen is essential for life. Aquatic ancestral animal species are thought to have independently terrestrialized and invented distinct strategies for efficient oxygen supply. The respiratory system of vertebrates like us is composed of lungs connected to the vasculature while insects have a single system delivering air directly to internal tissues. READ MORE

  5. 5. Endotoxin-induced inflammation in healthy human airways

    Author : Margaretha E. Smith; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LPS; neutrophils; bronchoalveolar lavage; human airways; innate immunity;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the innate immune response in healthy human airways in vivo after simulation of a Gram-negative infection. Intrabronchial exposure to the TLR4 agonist endotoxin was used as a model for the innate mechanisms in the immune response that are caused by cigarette smoke and by natural infection with Gram-negative bacteria.
