1. A Segmented Silicon Strip Detector for Photon-Counting Spectral Computed Tomography
Abstract : Spectral computed tomography with energy-resolving detectors has a potential to improve the detectability of images and correspondingly reduce the radiation dose to patients by extracting and properly using the energy information in the broad x-ray spectrum. A silicon photon-counting detector has been developed for spectral CT and it has successfully solved the problem of high photon flux in clinical CT applications by adopting the segmented detector structure and operating the detector in edge-on geometry. 2. Multi-species systems in optical lattices : From orbital physics in excited bands to effects of disorder
Abstract : In this thesis we explore different aspects of the physics of multi-species atomic systems in optical lattices. In the first part we will study cold gases in the first and second excited bands of optical lattices - the p and d bands. READ MORE

3. Evaluation and development of a capnodynamic method for estimation of pulmonary blood flow in a porcine model
Abstract : Effective pulmonary blood flow (EPBF) i.e. cardiac output (CO) minus shunt flow could be estimated by a capnodynamic equation. Via introduction of short pauses in the ventilatory pattern the required alterations of carbon dioxide are induced. READ MORE

4. Ontogenetic and comparative aspects of cerebellar and motor development
Abstract : During the course of development the motor repertoire of animals and humans alike go through dramatic changes. New motor patterns arise; movements become coordinated, improve in precision and are at the same time continuously calibrated to the changing body dimensions. The cerebellum is critical for movement coordination and adaptation in adults. READ MORE

5. Treatment Evaluation and Screening of Autism
Abstract : The aims of this thesis were: to review studies of treatment evaluation from the years 1992-2002; to evaluate the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children, TEACCH, treatment model for adults and children with autism; to develop and evaluate a screening instrument for early detection of autism and other developmental deficits, SEEK. The instruments used were: the Altman Checklist for Evaluating Medical Research; the Adult and Adolescent PsychoEducational Profile, AAPEP; and the SEEK. READ MORE
