  1. 16. The phencyclidine model of schizophrenia : dysregulation of brain dopamine systems induced by NMDA receptor antagonists

    Author : Jan M Mathé; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : phencyclidine; MK-801; CNQX; prazosin; tetrodotoxin; dopamine; neurotensin; ventral tegmental area; nucleus accumbens; medial prefrontal cortex;

    Abstract : Non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonists, such as phencyclidine (PCP) and dizocilpine (MK-801) can even acutely induce a drug induced psychotic state which closely resembles schizophrenia. The midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons, which originate in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), are involved in motivational, attentional and cognitive processes, and have also been profoundly implicated in schizophrenia. 2. 17. Design and Synthesis of Angiotensin IV Peptidomimetics Targeting the Insulin-Regulated Aminopeptidase (IRAP)

    Author : Hanna Andersson; Anders Hallberg; Anders Karlén; Federico Corelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; angiotensin IV; AT4; insulin-regulated aminopeptidase IRAP ; inhibitor; peptidomimetics; γ-turn mimetic; macrocycle; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Läkemedelskemi; Medicinal Chemistry; Läkemedelskemi;

    Abstract : Peptidomimetics derived from the bioactive hexapeptide angiotensin IV (Ang IV, Val1-Tyr2-Ile3-His4-Pro5-Phe6) have been designed and synthesized. These peptidomimetics are aimed at inhibiting the insulin-regulated amino peptidase (IRAP), also known as the AT4 receptor. READ MORE

  3. 18. Anti-epileptic and neuroprotective mechanisms by Topiramate and Levetiracetam evaluated in primary cultures

    Author : Mikael Ängehagen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : calcium imaging; phosphorylation; kainate; glutamate; caffeine; cerebral cortex; hippocampus; field potentials; neurons; astrocytes;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate plausible intracellular mechanisms of action for antiepileptic drugs, Topiramate (TPM) and Levetiracetam (LEV), and to investigate if TPM possesses neuroprotective properties. The thesis is based on results from calcium imaging, immunohistochemical stainings, viability tests, and Western blot using primary cortical or hippocampal cultures, or hippocampal brain slices. 4. 19. Pharmacological and environmental modulations of the rat glutamatergic system

    Author : Josefine Andin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Glutamate is the principal excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and it is implicated in neural transmission, learning, memory processes and neuronal plasticity. In the glutamatergic synapse two main components are present; the glutamate receptors and the glutamate transporters. READ MORE

  5. 20. On the role of NMDA receptor subunits in the acute and chronic effects of nicotine

    Author : Alexander Kosowski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : PCR; microdialysis; Wistar;

    Abstract : Nicotine is considered the main dependence-producing constituent in tobacco products. In analogy with other drugs of abuse, nicotine enhances dopamine (DA) neurotransmission within the mesocorticolimbic DA system. READ MORE
