  1. 16. The effects of posture, airway pressure and anesthesia on regulation of the regional ventilation and perfusion distribution in healthy humans

    Author : Sven Nyrén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Anesthesia; ALI; ARDS; CPAP; Dual isotope; Mechanical ventilation; Nitric oxide; Nuclear medicine; Prone position; Regional ventilation; Regional perfusion; SPECT;

    Abstract : Gas exchange has been observed to vary with posture in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. In this thesis, the effect of posture on theregional distribution of ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q) in the lungs under normal breathing with and without continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and during general anesthesia with mechanical ventilation was studied. 2. 17. Airborne nitric oxide : inflammatory marker and aerocrine messenger in man

    Author : Jon Lundberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ARDS; asthma; cystic fibrosis; cystitis; exhaled air; inflammatory bowel disease; inhaled nitric oxide; Kartagener s syndrome; nitric oxide synthase; sinusitis; ;

    Abstract : We have used a chemiluminescence technique to measure gaseous nitric oxide (NO) directly in hollow organs of humans. NO production was studied in the airways of healthy controls and patients with chronic inflammatory airway disease, in the stomach of healthy subjects, in the colon of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in the urinary bladder of patients with cystitis. 3. 18. Acute lung injury : incidence and predictors of outcome with special reference to inhaled nitric oxide

    Author : Owe Luhr; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Respiratory distress syndrome; Adult; -drug-therapy; -mortality; Treatment; -outcome; Nitric oxide; therapeutic-use; administration-and-dosage; -adverse effects; Mutagenicity; tests; Chromosome aberrations; Risk factors; Logistic models; Prospective studies.;

    Abstract : This work started out as a critical examination of the initial clinical experiences with inhalation of nitric oxide (INO) to patients with acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in Scandinavia 1991-1994. During this examination, we found that epidemiological data and prognostic factors were lacking in Scandinavia for these patient groups, making it difficult to evaluate new therapies. READ MORE

  4. 19. Hemodynamic Effects of Lung Function Optimization in Experimental Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

    Author : Arnoldo Santos; Anders Larsson; Fernando Suarez-Sipmann; John Marini; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Acute respiratory distress syndrome; Lung protective ventilation; Mechanical ventilation; Open lung approach; Pulmonary heart disease; Pulmonary vascular mechanics; Pulmonary vascular dysfunction; Pulse wave analysis; Right ventricular dysfunction; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care; Fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a severe pulmonary inflammation affecting thousands of patients every year in Sweden and has a mortality of 30-50%. Mechanical ventilation (MV) is usually necessary, but could per se augment the inflammation and contribute to mortality. READ MORE

  5. 20. Novel diagnostics and treatment of acute lung injury and transplantation - Preclinical and clinical implementation

    Author : Martin Stenlo; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Acute lung injury (ALI) and its most severe form, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) limit the utilization of donor lungs for transplantation but is also a common cause of death in the intensive care unit. There is a general lack of diagnostic tools by which to assess lung function in ARDS but, in addition, the treatments offered are limited. READ MORE
