  1. 21. ADHD in substance use disorders : prevalence and pharmacotherapy

    Author : Maija Konstenius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Substance use disorders (SUD) and Attention deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are persistent and prevailing disorders that conjointly are associated with negative lifeevents and mental distress. The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the rate of ADHD in substance using populations and to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of methylphenidate pharmacotherapy for treatment of co-existing ADHD and SUD. 2. 22. Matrix resorption in endochondral bone growth : ultrastructural studies, with special attention to the chondroclast

    Author : Joakim Nordahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : chondroclast; osteoclast; cartilage resorption; TRAP; cathepsin K; fibronectin; bone sialoprotein; osteopontin;

    Abstract : A substantial amount of the calcified cartilage in the distal parts of the epiphyseal plate is resorbed during endochondral growth of long bones. However, the mechanisms involved in this process are still largely unknown. On the other hand, bone-resorption in the lower metaphysis has been thoroughly investigated. READ MORE

  3. 23. Catalytic mechanisms and evolution of leukotriene A4 hydrolyse

    Author : Fredrik Tholander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Inflammation is the first response of the body to infection or physical irritation. This response can potentially trigger the whole immune system but in the initial stage mainly involves leukocytes of the innate immune system and a complex cascade of chemical mediators, which by different means control, maintain and resolve the process. 4. 24. Leukotriene A4 hydrolase : exploration of the active sites and catalytic mechanisms by site-directed mutagenesis

    Author : Martina Blomster Andberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Leukotriene (LT) A4 is a pivotal intermediate in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, a family of potent lipid mediators involved in a variety of inflammatory and allergic disorders. The bifunctional zinc metalloenzyme LTA4 hydrolase converts LTA4 into LTB4, one of the most potent chemotaxins known to date. READ MORE

  5. 25. Intracellular free amino acids and nutritional status in children with chronic renal failure on different treatments

    Author : Alberto Canepa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Chronic renal failure; transplantation; nutritional status; children; amino acids; plasma muscle; polymorphonuclear granulocytes; proteolysis; red blood cells;

    Abstract : In untreated adult patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), and in chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and kidney-transplanted patients, typical plasma and muscle intracellular amino acid (AA) patterns have been described. Similar AA abnormalities to those seen in adult patients have been observed in plasma and muscle tissue of children with CRF, but no studies have been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma and muscle in children on CAPD or after kidney transplantation.
