  1. 1. Development of a robust and rapid microfluidics-based antibiotic susceptibility test : From prototype to clinical implementation

    Author : Christer Malmberg; Johan Kreuger; Thomas Tängdén; Till Bachmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lab-on-a-chip; rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing; AST; sepsis; microfluidics; blood culture; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Even though bacteria normally are rapidly cleared from the blood by the immune system, a blood stream infection may arise, in turn possibly leading to sepsis and septic shock. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, where the inflammatory response to infection targets tissues and organs. READ MORE

  2. 2. Diagnostic and prognostic value of the AST/ALT ratio as an indicator of cirrhosis in chronic liver disease

    Author : Helena Nyblom; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : alcohol dependence; alcohol-related liver disease; AST ALT ratio; cirrhosis; cholangiocarcinoma; primary biliary cirrhosis; primary sclerosing cholangitis;

  3. 3. Oxygen Metabolism in Experimental Kidney Disease

    Author : Ebba Sivertsson; Fredrik Palm; Peter Hansell; Jenny Nyström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; kidney oxygenation; mitochondria; proteinuria; uncoupling protein; adenosine nucleotide transporter; diabetes; hyperthyroidism; thyroid hormone; hypertension; angiotensin II; CDK; AST-120; rats; mice; Fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Tubulointerstitial hypoxia has been proposed a unifying mechanism behind the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), regardless of primary diagnosis. Important factors that contribute to the development of hypoxia are reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), oxidative stress and mitochondria uncoupling. READ MORE

  4. 4. Thermal boundary conditions based on field modeling of fires : Heat transfer calculations in CFD and FE models with special regards to fire exposure represented with adiabatic surface temperatures

    Author : Joakim Sandström; Stephen Welch; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Steel Structures; Stålbyggnad;

    Abstract : Combining computer fluid dynamic, CFD, models with finite element, FE, models to calculate temperature in fire exposed structures can reduce design temperatures in structures while still obtaining the level of structural fire safety stipulated by society. A better understanding of heat transfer and the concept of adiabatic surface temperatures, AST, the transition of data between models can be simplified and more accurate temperature predictions can be made. 5. 5. Active school transportation : Understanding the parental decision-making process

    Author : Hanna Forsberg; Stina Rutberg; Anna-Karin Lindqvist; Lars Nyberg; Maria Hagströmer; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Active commuting to school; children; health promotion; parents; theory of planned behavior; physical activity; social norms; Fysioterapi; Physiotherapy;

    Abstract : Few children and adolescents reach the recommended levels of daily physical activity. This trend is evident in the countries examined in this thesis: Sweden and Spain. READ MORE
