1. Analytical Aspects of Atmospheric Pressure Ionisation in Mass Spectrometry
Abstract : The actual signal recorded with an analytical instrument is not always a true reflection of the analysed sample. In this thesis a further insight of the atmospheric pressure ionisation processes electrospray (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) has been endeavoured, to provide a deeper understanding of and ways to minimize this bias. 2. Modelling and Applications of the Hollow Cathode Plasma
Abstract : This thesis presents experimental and modelling research on atmospheric pressure hollow cathodes and hollow electrodes. Experiments with the hybrid hollow electrode activated discharge (H-HEAD), which is a combination of a hollow cathode and a microwave plasma source, is presented. READ MORE

3. Mesoscale Simulations of Atmospheric Flow in Complex Terrain
Abstract : The MIUU mesoscale model was further developed, in order to include information on large-scale atmospheric fields from global or regional atmospheric climate- and weather-prediction models. For this purpose, a new lateral boundary condition was developed and implemented into the model. READ MORE

4. Atmospheric pressure ionisation interface considerations for micro column separation with mass spectrometric detection
Abstract : Two miniaturised atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) interfaces were developed for micro column separation and their performances were investigated in high temperature open tubular column liquid chromatography and capillary supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The most influential parameters, for example, the interface probe position relative to the sampling orifice and the reagent ion plasma composition, were investigated to optimise the ion current signal and stability. 5. Oxidation of some Late Transition Metal Surfaces: Structural Studies from UHV to Atmospheric Pressure
Abstract : The oxidation of Rh, Pd and Pt is studied under conditions ranging from ultra high vacuum to ambient pressures, with emphasis on a complete understanding of the geometry of the various oxide structures found. The investigations use a combination of various experimental methods, including high resolution core level spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, surface x-ray diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy, as well as density functional theory calculations.
