  1. 16. Biological membrane interfaces involved in diseases : a biophysical study

    Author : Fredrick Lindström; Gerhard Gröbner; Dick Sandström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid-state NMR; DSC; Amyloid-beta peptide; Nociceptin; DMPC; DMPG; DDAB; peptide-lipid interaction; branched-chain fatty acid.; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Interactions between peptides and biological lipid membranes play a crucial role in many cellular processes such as in the mechanism behind Alzheimer’s disease where amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta)is thought to be a key component. The initial step of binding between a surface active peptide and its target membrane or membrane receptor can involve a non specific electrostatic association where positively charged amino acid residues and a negatively charged membrane surface interact. 2. 17. Studies on gamma-secretase activity and products

    Author : Jenny Frånberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : gamma-Secretase is a transmembrane aspartyl protease involved in processing of a multitude of functionally diverse substrates within their transmembrane domains. gamma-Secretase cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) generates the APP intracellular domain (AICD) and the amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta). 3. 18. The Alzheimer’s disease related gamma-secretase complex : localization and novel interacting proteins

    Author : Ji-Yeun Hur; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is caused by synaptic and neuronal loss in the brain that eventually results in cognitive decline. Characteristic hallmarks of AD are senile plaques containing the amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta) and neurofibrillary tangles containing hyperphosphorylated tau protein. READ MORE

  4. 19. Proteomic strategies for analysis of cerebrospinal fluid in neurodegenerative disorders

    Author : Sara Folkesson Hansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Alzheimer?s disease; frontotemporal dementia; cerebrospinal fluid; neurodegeneration; proteomics; mass spectrometry; prefractionation; protein identification; quantification;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT There is a great need for biomarkers to diagnose neurodegenerative disorders, such as the cognitive disorders Alzheimer?s disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is in contact with the extracellular fluid of the brain and is consequently a valuable medium for identifying biomarkers for neurological disorders. READ MORE

  5. 20. Molecular mechanisms in amyloid fibril formation

    Author : Waltteri Hosia; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns investigations on molecular processes and interactions that lead to amyloid fibril formation. Pulmonary surfactant protein C (SP-C), and a synthetic analogue thereof, SP-C(Leu), have similar properties in terms of charge distribution, hydrophobicity and secondary structure, yet they differ in their aggregation propensities.
