  1. 1. A tale of two antibiotics : Fusidic acid and Viomycin

    Author : Mikael Holm; Suparna Sanyal; Scott Blanchard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Protein Synthesis; Antibiotics; Fusidic acid; Viomycin; Translocation; Accuracy; Molecular Biotechnology; Molekylär bioteknik;

    Abstract : Antibiotics that target the bacterial ribosome make up about half of all clinically used antibiotics. We have studied two ribosome targeting drugs: Fusidic acid and Viomycin. Fusidic acid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to elongation factor G (EF-G) on the ribosome, thereby inhibiting translocation of the bacterial ribosome. READ MORE

  2. 2. Resistant pneumococci and use of antibiotics

    Author : Eva Melander; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; streptococcus pneumoniae; Antibiotics; drug resistance; bacteriology; Microbiology; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Pneumococcal resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem. The rapid increase in frequency seems to be caused by intercontinental spread of a few resistant clones. Resistance to antibiotics in pneumococci has reduced the therapeutic arsenal for common respiratory tract infections as well as for invasive infections. READ MORE

  3. 3. Essays on antibiotics use: Nudges, preferences & welfare benefits

    Author : Linnea Wickström Östervall; Jakob Svensson; Astri Muren; Kjetil Bjorvatn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; field experiment; nudge; reminder; common resources; antibiotics use; resistance; altruism; other-regarding preferences; time preferences; social security; temporary parental leave; natural experiment; Economics; nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : The stock of effective antibiotics can be seen as a common resource. Depletion of this potentially renewable, but currently finite, resource through the development of resistance poses an important policy problem. Prudent use can delay the spread of resistance. It is hence interesting to study factors that affect use and overuse of antibiotics. READ MORE

  4. 4. Type l diabetes in childhood and adolescence, environmental exposures and gut microbiota

    Author : Mona-Lisa Wernroth; Tove Fall; Bodil Svennblad; Katja Fall; Catarina Almqvist; Mikael Knip; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Type 1 diabetes; gut microbiota; antibiotics; stress; dogs; mode of delivery; Epidemiologi; Epidemiology;

    Abstract : Environmental factors leading to disturbances in the gut microbiota might play an important role as triggers for, and/or contributing factors in, the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The overall aim of the research underlying this thesis was to study the influence of environmental factor exposure on the risk of T1D in childhood and adolescence, and gut microbiota composition in early childhood. 5. 5. Effects of pharmaceuticals on natural microbial communities: Tolerance development, mixture toxicity and synergistic interactions

    Author : Sara Brosché; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; antibiotics; pharmaceutical mixtures; microbial community ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Due to our extensive use of pharmaceuticals, low concentrations (picomol-nanomol/L) end up in the aquatic environment. Antibiotics comprise a group of pharmaceuticals specifically designed to disrupt microbial biochemical processes, and might therefore in particular have detrimental effects on microbial communities in the environment.
