  1. 1. Expression of TGF- isoforms, their receptors and related SMAD proteins in brain pathology : Immunohistochemical studies focusing on infarcts, abscesses and malignant gliomas

    Author : Ahmad Khaled Ata; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; TGF-beta receptor; SMAD; brain; infarct; abscess; glioma; experimental; human; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the immunohistochemical expression of transforming growth factor beta(TGFβ) isoforms, their receptors and TGF-β-related SMAD proteins in brain pathology, chiefly in-farcts. One key question was whether the expressions of these compounds are altered within glial cells, endothelial cells of microvessels and other cell types in the vicinity of infarcts. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hidradenitis suppurativa : with special reference to carbon dioxide laser surgery

    Author : Jan Lapins; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease with recurrent abscesses. In most cases, it involves the axillar and anogenital regions. In industrialised countries, the prevalence is of 0.3% to 4%, and the disease is over-represented in young adult females. READ MORE

  3. 3. Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Brain Tumors - Clinical Applications

    Author : Isabella Björkman-Burtscher; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiology; Clinical physics; Localization; Abscess; Brain; Tumor; Spectroscopy; Magnetic Resonance; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering;

    Abstract : Aims: · to present a test phantom and test method for evaluation of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) single volume localization techniques regarding signal contamination; · to describe the introduction of 1H-MRS in the daily routine of a standard MR-unit; · to evaluate the possibilities offered by 1H-MRS to improve preoperative diagnostic accuracy in patients scheduled for stereotactic biopsy of intracranial mass lesions; · to evaluate the possibilities offered by 1H-MRS to improve diagnostics and therapy control in patients with brain abscesses; · to test the hypothesis that 1H-MRS might be useful for differentiation of brain tumors, based on metabolic changes in tissue across brain lesions or surrounding tissue. Results and conclusions: · The test phantom and test method allow quality assessment with good reproducibility. READ MORE

  4. 4. Clinical aspects of hidradenitis suppurativa

    Author : Hassan Killasli; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is often a chronic skin disease of unknown etiology characterized by formation of non-infectious inflammatory nodules, abscesses, and suppurating skin tunnels mainly in axillae and groins. The lesions are painful, scarring, malodorous and cause suffering, and social stigmatization. READ MORE
