6. Laser-based absorption spectrometry : development of NICE-OHMS towards ultra-sensitive trace species detection
Abstract : Laser-based absorption spectroscopy (AS) is a powerful technique for qualitative and quantitative studies of atoms and molecules. An important field of use of AS is the detection of species in trace concentrations, which has applications not only in physics and chemistry but also in biology and medicine, encompassing environmental monitoring, regulation of industrial processes and breath analysis. 7. The Compression/Absorption Heat Pump Cycle - System Simulations
Abstract : From the results presented in this thesis it is clear that the compression/absorption heat pump cycle offers several advantages over other types of heat pumps. In many cases it gives a higher or equally high COP compared with the single-fluid compression heat pump but also the smaller SCD (i.e. READ MORE

8. Synthesis and development of compounds for nonlinear absorption of light
Abstract : High-intensity light — for instance that from a laser — can be destructive, not only to the human eye, but also to equipment such as imaging sensors and optical communication devices. Therefore, effective protection against such light is desirable. READ MORE

9. Inhibition of Calcium and Zinc Absorption by Phytate in Man Methodological Studies and Hydrothermal Processing of Cereals to Improve Absorption
Abstract : A mathematical model based on measurements in a whole-body counter described the retention of calcium in the human body. It was shown that the relative retention of intravenous and orally administered 47Ca in all subjects (n = 10 - 11) were well described by fitting a simple function of time with two free parameters to a few whole-body measurements after day 6, when the unabsorbed calcium had been excreted. 10. Mechanism-based modeling of biological processes involved in oral absorption
Abstract : For orally administered drugs, the rate and extent of absorption are governed by the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, the characteristics of the dosage form and the physico-chemical properties of the drug. This thesis primarily aimed to improve the mechanistic understanding and the predictability of processes involved in the absorption of orally administered drugs using a population modeling approach.
