  1. 1. Engineering cytosolic acetyl-CoA metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Yiming Zhang; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; reverse engineering; flavodoxin; genomic DNA sequencing; ferredoxin; histone deacetylase; adaptive evolution; ferredoxin flavodoxin NADP reductase; pyruvate decarboxylase; citrate synthase; hexose transporter; yeast; mitochondria; aerobic growth; metabolic engineering.; acetyl-CoA; central carbon metabolism;

    Abstract : A Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain carrying deletions in all three pyruvate decarboxylase genes (also called Pdc negative yeast) represents a non-ethanol producing platform strain for biochemical production. However, it cannot grow on glucose as the sole carbon source due to the lack of cytosolic acetyl-CoA for lipid biosynthesis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Feruloyl esterases - Evaluation of their potential for biotechnological applications

    Author : Cyrielle Bonzom; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; multi-domain enzyme; acetyl esterase; enzyme immobilization; N-glycosylation; carbohydrate active enzyme family 1; acetyl xylan esterase; heterologous production; polysaccharide utilization loci; enzyme stability; feruloyl esterase;

    Abstract : Owing to the current efforts to find sustainable alternatives to petrochemical based industries and technologies, enzymatic degradation and valorization of plant biomass has been attracting interest. Due to the complexity of plant biomass, an array of enzymes is required to hydrolyze it, including esterases. READ MORE

  4. 4. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Author : Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 5. 5. Sensory neuronal protection & improving regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Andrew McKay Hart; Mikael Wiberg; Angus McGrouther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell death; TUNEL; optical disection; dorsal root ganglion; peripheral nerve; nerve conduit; Schwann cell; glial growth factor; leukaemia inhibitory factor; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Peripheral nerve trauma is a common cause of considerable functional morbidity, and healthcare expenditure. Particularly in the ~15% of injuries unsuitable for primary repair, standard clinical management results in inadequate sensory restitution in the majority of cases, despite the rigorous application of complex microsurgical techniques.
