    Abstract : Various molecular pathways in the brain shape our understanding of good and bad, as well as our motivation to seek and avoid such stimuli. This work evolves around how systemic inflammation causes aversion; and why general unpleasant states such as sickness, stress, pain and nausea are encoded by our brain as undesirable; and contrary to these questions, how drugs of abuse can subjugate the motivational neurocircuitry of the brain. Abstract : Acute confusional state (ACS) or delirium according to DSM-III-R holds a central position in the medicine of old age. ACS is a common and sometimes the only symptom of diseases and medical complications in the elderly patient. READ MORE

  5. 25. Anatomical, neurochemical and behavioural consequences of immunotoxin lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system

    Author : Giampiero Leanza; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural transplantation; reinnervation; axon growth; functional sparing; memory; learning; cortex; hippocampus; immunolesion; acetylcholine; basal forebrain; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The cholinergic hypothesis of geriatric memory dysfunction suggests that the learning and memory deficits representing the cardinal symptoms of dementia in the aged and in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease may be attributable to a decline in the function of the cholinergic projection systems of the basal forebrain. Although many studies have addressed the issue of a causal relationship between cholinergic hypofunction and cognitive disturbance, analyses of the functional role of the basal forebrain cholinergic neuronal systems in the brain have so far been hampered by the lack of an efficient and specific cholinergic neurotoxin.
