  1. 1. Acoustic Forces in Cytometry and Biomedical Applications: Multidimensional Acoustophoresis

    Author : Carl Grenvall; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Acoustophoresis; Microfluidics; Ultrasound; Multinode; Cell Sorting; Particle Positioning; Cytometry; Lab-on-a-Chip; µTAS; Binary Separation; Acoustic Barriers; Acoustic Particle Manipulation; Acoustic Standing Waves; Blood Separation; Milk Analysis;

    Abstract : Over the last decades the ongoing work in the fields of Lab-on-a-Chip and Micro-Total-Analysis-Systems has led to the discovery of new or improved ways to handle and analyse small volumes of biofluids and complex biosuspensions. The benefits of working on the microscale include: miniaturization of the analysis systems with less need for large sample volumes; temporal and spatial control of suspended particle/cell positions; low volume sheath flow lamination or mixing; novel separation techniques by using forces inherent to the microscale domain; precise regulation of sample temperatures and rapid analysis with less volumes needed to be processed. 2. 2. On Health-Related Quality of Life and Diagnostic Improvements in Rhinosinusitis

    Author : Pernilla Sahlstrand Johnson; allergi och livskvalitet Laryngoesofagologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rhinosinusitis; nasal polyps; health-related quality of life; absenteeism; Doppler ultrasound; acoustic streaming; attenuation;

    Abstract : Rhinosinusitis is defined as an inflammatory process involving the mucosa of the nose and one or more of the paranasal sinuses. The aims of the work presented in this thesis were to investigate the degree to which rhinosinusitis affects the health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and to determine whether the diagnosis of this condition can be improved using Doppler ultrasound. Abstract : During the last decade, ultrasonic manipulation has matured into an important tool with a wide range of applications, from fundamental cell biological research to clinical and industrial implementations. The contactless nature of ultrasound makes it possible to manipulate living cells in a gentle way, e.g. READ MORE

  4. 4. On microchannel acoustophoresis - Experimental considerations and life science applications

    Author : Per Augustsson; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microtechnology; microfluidics; lab on a chip; separation; acoustophoresis; ultrasound; acoustic resonance; acoustic radiation force; phage display; circulating tumour cells; acoustofluidics;

    Abstract : This thesis presents experimental studies of microchannel acoustophoresis, a technique for manipulation of microscopic objects in suspension by means of acoustic radiation forces induced by ultrasonic standing wave fields. By arranging an acoustic resonance across the width of a microchannel, the path of individual cells or microparticles can be deflected orthogonally to the fluid flow. READ MORE

  5. 5. Porous Silicon Microbioreactors - Applications and Technology

    Author : Martin Bengtsson; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Elektroteknik; Electrical engineering; immobilised cells; enzyme reactor; micro fluidics; Microreactor; porous silicon;

    Abstract : Microfluidic systems have become one of the most interesting fields in the research of chemical analysis. Miniaturized systems exhibit numerous practical advantages when compared with traditional batch-scale synthesis such as lower sample volumes, increased control of the reactions and higher sample throughput.
