  1. 1. Evaluating the process of change : Studies on patient journey, hearing disability acceptance and stages-of-change

    Author : Vinaya K. C. Manchaiah; Thomas Lunner; Gunnel Backenroth; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Patient journey; Stages of chage; acceptance; hearing disability; hearing loss; Patientprocess; Beteendeförändring; Acceptans; Hörselhandikapp; Hörselskada;

    Abstract : Person with hearing impairment (PHI) and their Communication partners (CPs) have a range of experiences and milestones before, during and after their audiological assessment and/or rehabilitation sessions. The term ‘patient journey’ refers to understanding the experiences and the processes the patient goes through during the course of the disease and the treatment regime. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cognitive deafness : The deterioration of phonological representations in adults with an acquired severe hearing loss and its implications for speech understanding

    Author : Ulf Andersson; Björn Lyxell; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Acquired hearing loss; phonological processsing; cochlear implants; speechreading; Disability research; Handikappsforskning;

    Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to examine possible cognitive consequences of acquired hearing loss and the possible impact of these cognitive consequences on the ability to process spoken language presented through visual speechreading or through a cochlear implant.The main findings of the present thesis can be summarised in the following conclusions: (a) The phonological processing capabilities of individuals who have acquired a severe hearing loss or deafness deteriorate progressively as a function of number of years with a complete or partial auditory deprivation. 3. 3. Hearing in children with cleft palate

    Author : Birgitta Tengroth; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Objective: The overall aim of this thesis was to collect longitudinal information about hearing thresholds and complications due to otitis media with effusion (OME) in children with cleft palate. Since OME is highly prevalent in children with cleft palate, many authors have hypothesized that the hearing loss associated to OME contributes to the delayed development of early speech and language often seen in these children. 4. 4. Molecular epidemiology of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus : epidemiological aspects of MRSA and the dissemination in the community and in hospitals

    Author : Carolina Berglund; Bo Söderquist; Teruyo Ito; Ulf Tidefelt; Johanna Ericson Sollid; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA ; community-acquired MRSA CA-MRSA ; staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec SCCmec ; multilocus sequence typing MLST ; horizontal transfer; Panton Valentine leukocidin PVL ; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Methicillin-resistenta Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) som bär på genen mecA, har förekommit och spridit sig över hela världen, främst i sjukhusmiljö, och orsakat utbrott av vårdrelaterade (så kallade nosokomiala) infektioner. Dessa infektioner kan inte behandlas med stafylokock-penicilliner och MRSA-bakterierna är ofta resistenta även mot flera andra grupper av antibiotika vilket medför att infektionerna ofta är påtagligt svårbehandlade. 5. 5. Growing up with one ear : central auditory structure and function in unilateral ear canal atresia

    Author : Malin Siegbahn; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The following thesis aims to give more insight into the functional and structural response of the central auditory system to congenital unilateral ear canal atresia (UCA) and the accompanying asymmetric hearing with conductive hearing loss on the atretic side. There is clear evidence that unilateral hearing loss, including UCA, has a negative impact on sound localization ability and perception of speech in noise. READ MORE
