  1. 1. Cellular and molecular responses of periodontal connective tissue cells to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans cytolethal distending toxin

    Author : Georgios N. Belibasakis; Sotirios Kalfas; Ulf H. Lerner; Anders Johansson; Veli-Jukka Uitto; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans; cytolethal distending toxin; periodontal connective tissue cells; localized aggressive periodontitis; growth arrest; bone resorption; receptor activator of NF-κB ligand; osteoprotegerin; pro-inflammatory cytokines; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is present in elevated proportions and numbers in dental bacterial biofilms of patients with localized aggressive periodontitis. This variant of periodontal disease, occurring in adolescents and young adults, is characterized by rapid and severe destruction of the connective tissues and bone supporting the teeth, eventually culminating in tooth loss. 2. 2. Inflammatory cell death of human macrophages induced by Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin

    Author : Peyman Kelk; Anders Johansson; Charels A Dinarello; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; leukotoxin; IL-1β; caspase-1; inflammatory cell death; pyroptosis; ODONTOLOGY; ODONTOLOGI; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Aggregatibacter (Actinobacillus) actinomycetemcomitans is a bacterium mainly associated with aggressive forms of periodontitis. Among its virulence factors, a leukotoxin is suggested to play an important role in the pathogenicity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Vesicle-independent extracellular release and bioactivity of peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein from Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

    Author : Maribasappa Karched; Sirkka Asikainen; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein; outer membrane proteins; immunoproteomics; periodontitis; cytokines; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.; Oral microbiology; Oral mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Aggregatibacter (Actinobacillus) actinomycetemcomitans is a Gram-negative coccobacillus of the Pasteurellaceae family. It is implicated in periodontitis, a common low-grade bacterial infection, but it can also cause non-oral infections. The main aim of this project was to identify and characterize in A. READ MORE

  4. 4. The miswak (chewing stick) and oral health : studies on oral hygiene practices of urban Saudi Arabians

    Author : Meshari Al-Otaibi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Chewing stick; DNA probe; miswak; oral hygiene; oral microbiota; Salvadora persica; subgingival plaque; Saudi Arabia;

    Abstract : The miswak, a traditional chewing stick for cleaning teeth, is made from the plant Salvadora persica. For religious and cultural reasons, miswak use is firmly established and widespread in Saudi Arabia and most other Muslim countries. Only recently has scientific evaluation of the miswak been undertaken. READ MORE

  5. 5. Factors affecting peri-implant tissue reactions

    Author : Margareta Hultin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Dental implants long-term maintenance; microbiota; inflammation; periodontitis; periimplantitis smoking crevicular fluid.;

    Abstract : Screw- shaped titanium implants are today routinely used m the substitution of lost teeth. In this thesis some of the biological factors related to the long-term survival and maintenance of dental implants were studied. The first arm of these studies was to evaluate the neutrophil activation around teeth and dental implants (Papers I & II). READ MORE
