  2. 2. The secretome of brown adipose tissue

Author : Ida R. Hansen; Jan Nedergaard; Francesco Villarroya; Stockholms universitet; []

Abstract : Brown adipose tissue has long been known for its heat-producing capacity, but less is known about its possible effects as a secretory organ. This thesis summarizes information about presently known factors secreted from brown adipose tissue and about their actions. We were able to add factors to the list by the use of a signal-sequence trap method. READ MORE

  3. 3. Vascular development : From embryonic stem cells to arteries and veins

Author : Fredrik Lanner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

Abstract : A fundamental question in developmental biology is how a single fertilized egg cell and its progeny are programmed or instructed to form thousands of different cell types and how these are organized into a complex and functional organism. In this thesis I have explored how a specific subset of cells is formed - the vascular endothelial cells lining our blood vessels. READ MORE

  4. 4. Emerging biomarkers in cardiometabolic disease

Abstract : AbstractThe epidemiological association between diabetes and heart failure is well-established and the two entities areemerging as global threats, both individually and synergistically, to an aging population. The exploration of multipleproteins can shed light on pathophysiological pathways in both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Expression of Neuroendocrine Markers in Normal and Neoplastic Tissue with an Emphasis on Ghrelin and Obestatin

Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to characterize the expression of the peptides ghrelin and obestatin, as well as other neuroendocrine markers in human normal tissues, in invasive breast cancer and a wide panel of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). In normal tissues the expression of ghrelin and obestatin was mainly localized to the gastric mucosa, and in lesser extent in the remaining gastrointestinal tract, endocrine pancreas and mammary glands.
