  1. 1. An investigation into some aspects for foamed bitumen technology

    Author : May Namutebi; Björn Birgisson; Alvaro Guarin; Umaru Bagampadde; Baoshan Huang; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Foamed bitumen; Binder ageing; Aggregate coating; Compaction; Mix design; Aggregate porosity; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Byggvetenskap;

    Abstract : Despite applications of foamed bitumen technology in pavement construction in various places around the world, there are still several aspects about this technology that are not clear. In addition, knowledge on foamed bitumen technology is mainly empirical and lacks scientific basis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Some Aspects of Foamed Bitumen Technology

    Author : May Namutebi; Björn Birgisson; Umaru Bagampadde; Jonas Ekblad; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Foamed bitumen; Aggregate coating; Rice density; Foam characteristics; Surface energy; Locking concept; Gyratory; Compaction; Optimum moisture content; Other civil engineering and architecture; Övrig samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur;

    Abstract : Although foamed bitumen has been widely applied in pavement construction some of its aspects are still not yet understood. In this study, some of these aspects including: effects of the foaming process on binder chemistry, characterization of foamed bitumen and development of a rational method to optimize foam characteristics, evaluation of aggregate particle coating within foamed bitumen treated materials, and development of a gyratory compaction procedure for laterite gravels treated with foamed bitumen were addressed. 3. 3. Ageing of Asphalt Mixtures : Micro-scale and mixture morphology investigation

    Author : Prabir Kumar Das; Björn Birgisson; Nicole Kringos; Andreas Loizos; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Ageing; Aggregate packing; Atomic force microscopy; Asphalt mixture; Bitumen; Diffusion; Finite element analysis; Gradation; Micro-structure; Mixture morphology; Oxidative ageing; Surface ageing;

    Abstract : There are many variables that affect the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures with time, among which age hardening may be considered one of the important ones. Age hardening of asphalt mixtures is an irreversible process, which contributes to a reduction of the durability of pavements and eventually increases the maintenance cost. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modelling optical properties of morphologically complex soot aerosols

    Author : Franz Kanngiesser; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aerosol; remote sensing; depolarisation; lidar; black carbon; scattering;

    Abstract : Soot containing aerosol has both adverse impacts on the Earth's climate and on human health. Monitoring soot sources, transport pathways and sinks on global scale requires satellite-borne remote sensing techniques. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structural changes during cellulose composite processing

    Author : Helena Halonen; Monica Ek; Tommy Iversen; Derek D. Gray; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; CP MAS 13C NMR; cellulose; fibril aggregation; biocomposite; compression moulding; supramolecular structure;

    Abstract : Two approaches for creating a new all-cellulose composite material have been studied: the biosynthesis of compartmentalised bacterial cellulose fibril aggregates and the compression moulding of commercial chemical wood pulps processed with only water. The objective was to study the structural changes during processing and the complexity of relating the mechanical properties of the final biocomposites to the nanoscale structure was highlighted.
