  1. 11. Genes that modulate or mediate dopaminergic neurotransmission : expression of the human prodynorphin gene and association studies with candidate genes in an alcohol patient sample

    Author : Thomas Geijer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : association study; alcoholism; DNA polymorphisms; dopamine receptors DRD2; DRD3; DRD4 ; tyrosine hydroxylase TH ; prodynorphin; messengerRNA; gene expression; promotor Stockholm 1997;

    Abstract : The development of alcoholism may at least partly be attributed to the effect of ethanol on reward and reinforcement. As a genetic influence in the vulnerability to alcoholism and drug abuse has been documented, it is of interest to investigate genes active in brain structures which mediate reward and reinforcement. 2. 12. Hazardous alcohol use and alcohol use disorders in women : characteristics and vulnerability factors

    Author : Åsa Magnusson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to study vulnerability factors associated with hazardous alcohol consumption during pregnancy and alcohol use disorders among Swedish women. Different risk-factors and characteristics were studied, and examined for their ability to discriminate or identify different subtypes (type I/late onset and type II/early onset) of alcohol dependence (alcoholism). 3. 13. Variation at candidate gene loci and their fuctional importance in rodent models of ethanol dependence

    Author : Karl Björk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : As genetic research has progressed, psychiatric disorders, including the addictions have emerged as moderately heritable. For alcoholism, the overall heritability has been estimated from twin studies to range between 50 to 60%. READ MORE

  4. 14. Platelet monoamine oxidase : From genetic regulation to behavior

    Author : Håkan Garpenstrand; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; monoamine oxidase; platelet; personality; CNS; serotonin; dopamine; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of personality and vulnerability forpsychiatric disorders. The activity of monoamine oxidase in platelets (trbc-MAO), which is mainlygenetically determined, correlates to personality traits such as sensation-seeking and impulsiveness, andlow trbc-MAO activity is more common in patients with type 2 alcoholism. 5. 15. Conditional and non-conditional reward-related responses to alcohol. Nicotinic mechanisms

    Author : Elin Löf; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ethanol; nicotine; ventral tegmental area; nucleus accumbens; dopamine; nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; gamma-amino-butyric acid receptor A; conditioned reinforcement; in vivo microdialysis; rat;

    Abstract : The mesolimbic dopamine system is believed to mediate the positive reinforcing and rewarding effects of addictive drugs by increasing dopamine levels in its terminal area, the nucleus accumbens (nAc). Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) within this system appear important for the pharmacological actions of both alcohol and nicotine, which may explain the frequent co-abuse of these two drugs.
