1. Algal-Bacterial Photobioreactors for the Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants
Abstract : The aerobic biodegradation of toxic organic volatile contaminants is always limited by the low aqueous solubility of O2. Therefore, intensive bubbling or surface aeration is required to supply the bacterial community with sufficient O2 to carry out pollutant mineralization. This can cause the hazardous volatilization of toxic volatile contaminants. READ MORE

2. Microbial Treatment of Heavy Metal Leachates
Abstract : Ore-mining, metallurgy and other industrial activities represent the source of heavy metal and radionuclide contamination in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Physico-chemical processes are employed for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater. READ MORE

3. Utilization of terrestrially derived dissolved organic nitrogen by aquatic bacteria
Abstract : I investigated the bacterial utilization of terrestrially derived dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in aquatic ecosystems, and assessed the potential role of river-born DON in marine eutrophication. To determine the bioavailability of DON, I developed a bioassay employing N-limited bacterial regrowth cultures, which were calibrated with additions of inorganic nitrogen. READ MORE

4. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton
Abstract : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. READ MORE

5. Regulation of the bacterial cell cycle in response to starvation
Abstract : Bacteria have adapted to diverse environments, which are often unpredictable and constantly changing. In order to survive, bacteria need to make the most of nutrients while they are available, while being prepared to rapidly change their behaviour when conditions take a turn for the worse. READ MORE
