  1. 1. Coated Norway Spruce : Influence of Wood Characteristics on Water Sorption and Coating Durability

    Author : Tinh Sjökvist; Åsa Blom; Carsten Mai; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Heartwood; Sapwood; Wood extractives; Moisture content; Paint; Alkyd; Acrylic; Linseed oil; Calcimine paint; Mould; Fungi; Algae; Weathering; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood used outdoors is often degraded and discoloured by microorganisms as a natural part of its life cycle, particularly when exposed to high levels of moisture for prolonged times. In this case, the application of a coating (i.e. paint) is an option for increasing the service life of the wood. READ MORE

  2. 2. Waterborne Alkyd-Acrylic Hybrids with High Solids Content -Preparation and Properties-

    Author : Mehrnoush Jowkar Deriss; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biopolymers; Polymer technology; Polymerteknik;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns the preparation, characterization and film formation of a waterborne alkyd-acrylic hybrid system with high solids content of about 80 %. The alkyd-acrylic hybrids were prepared by slowly adding a linseed oil alkyd to an acrylic latex dispersion under stirring. READ MORE

  3. 3. Surface chemical behaviour

    Author : Marie Wickman; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The objective of the investigations included in this thesisis to show how the properties of alkyd resins, used as bindersin offset printing inks, affect the ink in terms of pigmentdispersion, emulsification of fountain solution, and inksetting.The interactions between alkyd resins and aqueous solutionshave been investigated by interfacial tension measurementsusing the pendant drop technique and by measurement of dropletsize using light diffraction. 4. 4. Understanding corrosion protection mechanisms of nanocomposite polymer coatings on carbon steel : A combination of in-situ AFM and electrochemical studies

    Author : Jing Li; Jinshan Pan; Per Claesson; Herman Terryn; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Polymer coatings; electrochemistry; nano; in-situ AFM; mechanism; corrosion protection; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Corrosion protection of carbon steel is crucial in today’s world and there is an urgent need to replace the hazardous compounds used with environmentally friendly anticorrosion coatings. In this European collaborative research project, new types of functional composite anticorrosion coatings for steel were developed with properties beyond the state-of-the-art using nanotechnology. 5. 5. Surface interactions of wood with adhesives and coatings

    Author : Ralph Nussbaum; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The theme of this thesis is the properties of wood surfaces,and particularly some important aspects of their interactionswith adhesives and coatings.The surface inactivation of wood due to the development ofchemical weak boundary layers was monitored by wettabilitystudies based on contact angle measurements.
