  2. 2. Emulsification of Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) -characterization of dispersions and emulsifiers

    Author : Kristina Mohlin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hydrolysis; droplet size; hydrophobizing agent; dispersion; surfactant; AKD; emulsification; viscosity; surface tension; polymer; phase behavior; Alkyl Ketene Dimer;

    Abstract : Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) is a commonly used hydrophobizing agent in the paper industry, introducing capillary absorption barriers for polar liquids, which makes the paper more resistant to liquid penetration. Since AKD is a so-called internal sizing agent it is usually added in the form of a water-borne dispersion. READ MORE

    Abstract : Efforts to address environmental concerns have resulted in new regulations designed to plan the reduction of plastic and synthetic polymer usage, necessitating the search for sustainable natural alternatives with comparable cost-effectiveness and mechanical performance. Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fibres are one of the most affordable natural fibres that have no chemical refining in production, production have a high yield of 90-98% and TMP fibres have been demonstrated to improve the mechanical characteristics (strength, stiffness and toughness) of wood-polymer composites (WPCs) compared to the pure polymer. Abstract : Protein analysis is important to understanding biological systems, but sample diversity necessitates a multitude of analysis techniques and methods. Challenges that are addressed include analysis of low abundance samples, fractionation to reduce sample complexity, and automation to reduce time and cost. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fundamentals of Wetting and Mechanical Durability of Superhydrophobic Coatings

    Author : Pontus Olin; Lars Wågberg; Fredrik Tiberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : In paper I the friction between three different superhydrophobic surfaces and water drops were investigated using high‑speed video. The surfaces were two based on a hydrophobic wax and the third was the leaf of a Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera). The acceleration of water drops was measured as a function of drop size and surface inclination. READ MORE
