6. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Abstract : Icodextrin is a glucose polymer which is used as osmotic agent to provide sustained ultrafiltration (UF) during the long (8-16 hours) dwell in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aims of this thesis were to study: the metabolism of icodextrin in the peritoneal cavity and in the circulation of PD patients and non-uremic rats, the role of alpha-amylase in its hydrolysis, and the rate of breakdown of a synthetic maltoheptaose (G7) ex vivo which we propose as a novel measure of amylase mediated oligosaccharide metabolism. 7. Non-invasive analysis of leukotrienes as biomarkers of airway inflammation : method development and clinical applications
Abstract : Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two common diseases characterized by chronic airway inflammation, but the inflammation in asthma is different from the one in COPD. In addition, asthma is a heterogeneous disease presenting with many different phenotypes (e.g. READ MORE

8. Lipoproteomics : mapping of proteins in LDL and HDL
Abstract : High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and (LDL)-density lipoprotein (LDL) are important lipoprotein fractions in human plasma. HDL is the most abundant lipoprotein particle and a negative risk factor of atherosclerosis while LDL is considered to possess atherogenic properties. READ MORE

9. Spices in the postprandial metabolic regulation of healthy humans : An integrated physiological and omics approach
Abstract : Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a consequence of obesity and defined as cluster of at least three out of five criteria covering insulin resistance/glucose intolerance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, low HDL-c and elevated TG levels. Imbalance between energy intake and expenditure is known to alter normal physiological function in many aspects, and leads to obesity, which in the long run may turn into type 2 diabetes (T2D) and ultimately cardiovascular disease (CVD). 10. Effect of surface characteristics on cellular adherence and activity
Abstract : Ersättning av förlorade tänder med tandimplantat är numera en vanlig behandlingsmetod med generellt goda resultat. Antalet implantatsystem på den internationella marknaden har ökat kraftigt under senare år. READ MORE
