  1. 1. Exploration of microbial diversity and evolution through cultivation independent phylogenomics

    Author : Joran Martijn; Thijs J.G. Ettema; Andrew Roger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cultivation independent genomics; metagenomics; single-cell genomics; metagenomic binning; phylogenetics; phylogenomics; phylogenetic artefacts; comparative genomics; gene tree-species tree reconciliation; rRNA amplicon sequencing; Tara Oceans; origin of mitochondria; Alphaproteobacteria; Rickettsiales; Haloarchaea; endosymbiosis; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Our understanding of microbial evolution is largely dependent on available genomic data of diverse organisms. Yet, genome-sequencing efforts have mostly ignored the diverse uncultivable majority in favor of cultivable and sociologically relevant organisms. READ MORE

  2. 2. Drivers of Population Dynamics in Bacterioplankton : Spotlight on Alphaproteobacteria and its dominant SAR11 Lineage

    Author : Friederike Heinrich; Stefan Bertilsson; Alexander Eiler; David Kirchman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial community dynamics; Alphaproteobacteria; SAR11; LD12; Southern Ocean; lakes; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Abstract : Bacteria are mediators of biogeochemical cycles and are in this way vital for maintaining life on earth. Their distribution, abundance and functioning are driven by environmental heterogeneity and dynamic change in abiotic and biotic factors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Phylogenomics of Oceanic Bacteria

    Author : Johan Viklund; Siv Andersson; Edward DeLong; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phylogenetics; SAR11; mitochondria;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis has been the phylogenomics and evolution of the Alphaproteobacteria. This is a very diverse group which encompasses bacteria from intraceullar parasites, such as the Rickettsiales, to freeliving bacteria such as the most abundant bacteria on earth, the SAR11. 4. 4. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria

    Author : Weizhou Zhao; Siv Andersson; Sandra L. Baldauf; Sarahi L Garcia; Karen Lloyd; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; streamlined genome; aquatic bacteria; single cell genomics; metagenomics; evolutionary genomics; salinity; Baltic Sea; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 5. 5. Uncovering novel cell wall chemistries in gram negative bacteria : from development or dedicated peptidoglycan chemometric tools to functional genomics

    Author : Akbar Espaillat; Felipe Cava; Sun Nyunt Wai; Waldemar Vollmer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteria; cell wall; peptidoglycan; peptidoglycan variations; D-amino acids; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Bacteria are surrounded by an external cell wall whose main component is a polymeric net-like structure called the peptidoglycan (PG) or murein sacculus. PG plays crucial roles in bacterial physiology (eg morphogenesis, growth fitness and regulation of innate immunity). READ MORE
