1. Pollinators, Enemies, Drought, and the Evolution of Reproductive Traits in Primula farinosa
Abstract : In this thesis, I combined comparative and experimental approaches to examine selection on reproductive traits and population differentiation in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically, I (1) determined whether the effects of floral display and interactions with pollinators and seed predators, and plant reproductive success were frequency-dependent and affected by surrounding vegetation context, (2) examined the consequences of intermittent drought years on population dynamics using numerical simulations based on demographic data collected over seven years, (3) analyzed among-population differentiation in flowering phenology and reproductive allocation, and its relationship to soil-depth at the site of origin. 2. Gonad and ejaculate allocation in alternative reproductive tactics of salmon and trout with reference to sperm competition
Abstract : Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., exhibit alternative male maturation phenotypes, anadromous and precociously mature parr, which commonly endure in sperm competition at the spawning grounds. READ MORE

3. Female reproductive strategies and sexual conflicts in a polygynous mating system
Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated conflicts of interest in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) with a focus on female reproductive strategies. The extent to which males provided parental care was a key issue in understanding the mating system of the starling. READ MORE

4. A functional genomic investigation of an alternative life history strategy : The Alba polymorphism in Colias croceus
Abstract : Life history traits affect the timing and pattern of maturation, reproduction, and survival during an organism’s lifecycle and are the major components influencing Darwinian fitness. Co-evolved patterns of these traits are known as life history strategies (LHS) and variation occurs between individuals, populations, and species. READ MORE

5. Quality of maternal healthcare : Exploring severe maternal outcomes and the influence of delays and decision-making on caesarean sections in a low-resource setting
Abstract : Somaliland has one of the highest maternal mortality rates worldwide, yet there is limited evidence for severe maternal outcomes and challenges with the provision and utilisation of emergency obstetric care (EmOC). This thesis studied quality of maternal healthcare by exploring severe maternal outcomes and the influences of delays and decision-making on caesarean sections in Somaliland. READ MORE
