  1. 6. Mitochondria in Alzheimer's Disease : The Presequence Protease and Mitochondria-Associated ER Membranes

    Author : Catarina Moreira Pinho; Elzbieta Glaser; Paolo Bernardi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer s Disease; Mitochondria; Mitochondria-associated ER membranes; human Presequence Protease; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent age-related neurodegenerative disorders and the accumulation of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) in the temporal lobe has been implicated in the pathology of AD. Synaptic transmission in neuronal cells is a highly energy dependent process, which relies on the presence and proper function of mitochondria. READ MORE

    Abstract : This thesis is a contribution to feminist laboratory studies and a critical engagement with the natural sciences, or more precisely research on the biochemical workings and deadly relations of Alzheimer’s disease emanating from a year of field work in a Drosophila fly lab. The natural sciences have been a point of fascination within the field of gender studies for decades. READ MORE

  3. 8. Genetic Studies of Alzheimer's Disease

    Author : Elin Blom; Anna Glaser; Martin Ingelsson; Lars Lannfelt; Jan Hillert; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Linkage; Affected sib-pairs; APOE; APP duplication; 10q21; 19q13; Wnt signaling; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi;

    Abstract : Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) often have a family history of the disease, implicating genetics as a major risk factor. Three genes are currently known to cause familial early-onset AD (65 years), only the APOE gene has repeatedly been associated to AD, where the ε4 allele increases disease risk and decreases age at onset. 4. 9. Links between plasma apoE and glucose metabolism, brain insulin signaling, and synaptic integrity : Relevance to Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology

    Author : Anna Edlund; Henrietta Nielsen; William Rebeck; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; apolipoprotein E; insulin; metabolism; Amyloid precursor protein APP ; Fe65; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : Human apolipoprotein E (apoE) exists as three main isoforms called apoE2, apoE3, and apoE4, of which the E4 isoform is associated with increased Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk. Brain glucose hypometabolism, linked to synaptic dysfunction, occurs years before symptom onset in AD, especially in APOEε4-carriers. READ MORE

  5. 10. Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease and obesity

    Author : Linda Tracy; Kerstin Iverfeldt; Colin Combs; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; obesity; neuroinflammation; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and obesity are both major problems in the western world. Although they may appear to have little in common at first glance, they are both characterized by chronic inflammation. Exactly how inflammation affects these disorders is far from clear. READ MORE
