16. Expanding the Amino Acid Alphabet by Design : Enhanced and Controlled Catalytic Activity in Folded Polypeptide Catalysts
Abstract : This thesis addresses structure and reactivity of polypeptide catalysts in reactions that mimic the hydrolysis of RNA and DNA. A designed helix-loop-helix motif was used as a scaffold where the amino acid residues were systematically varied. READ MORE

17. Cytochrome P450 Enzymes in Bile Acid Biosynthesis and Fatty Acid Metabolism : Studies on Members of the Porcine CYP4A and CYP8B Subfamilies
Abstract : The present investigation is devoted to studies on porcine members of the cytochrome P450 4A (CYP4A) and CYP8B1 subfamilies, which are involved in bile acid biosynthesis and fatty acid metabolism. Hyocholic acid is considered to fulfil the requirements for trihydroxy bile acids in the domestic pig (Sus scrofa) in the absence of cholic acid. READ MORE

19. Expression of Manganese Lipoxygenase and Site-Directed Mutagenesis of Catalytically Important Amino Acids : Studies on Fatty Acid Dioxygenases
Abstract : Polyunsaturated fatty acids can be bioactivated by two families of dioxygenases, which either contain non-heme iron (lipoxygenases) or heme (cyclooxygenases, linoleate diol synthases and α-dioxygenases).Lipoxygenases and their products play important roles in the pathophysiology of plants and fungi. 20. Exotic Ribosomal Enzymology
Abstract : This thesis clarifies intriguing enzymology of the ribosome, the multiRNA/multiprotein complex that catalyzes protein synthesis (translation). The large ribosomal RNAs (23S and 16S rRNAs in E. coli) are post-transcriptionally modified by many specific modification enzymes, yet the functions of the modifications remain enigmatic. READ MORE
