  1. 11. Regulation of Mammalian Poly(A) Polymerase Activity

    Author : Ann-Charlotte Thuresson; Barklie Clements; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomedicine; poly A polymerase; PAP; polyadenylation; isoforms; phosphorylation; alternative splicing; CPSF interaction; aminoglycosides; Biomedicin; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Molekylär cellbiologi; Molecular Cellbiology;

    Abstract : Poly(A) polymerase (PAP) is the enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of the adenine tail to the 3’-end of mRNA. This A-tail is present on the majority of the primary RNA transcripts of protein-coding genes, and is important for mRNA stability, export to the cytoplasm and translation. Therefore, PAP is a key regulator of eukaryotic gene expression. READ MORE

  2. 12. Tracking single molecules in uncharted territory : A single-molecule method to study kinetics in live bacteria

    Author : Javier Aguirre Rivera; Magnus Johansson; Dmitri N. Ermolenko; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-molecule; protein synthesis; fluorescence microscopy; antibiotics; aminoglycosides; macrolides; apramycin; gentamicin; paromomycin; S13; translation; bacteria; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : The synthesis of proteins, also known as translation, is a fundamental process in every living organism. The steps in the translation of genetic information to functional proteins have been meticulously studied, mostly using in vitro techniques, yielding a detailed model of their mechanisms. READ MORE

  3. 13. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of aminoglycosides

    Author : Barbro Isacsson; Stig Holm; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The pharmacokinetics of amikacin in humans and the pharmacodynamic effects, i.e. initial killing and postantibiotic effect (P AE), of the aminoglycosides were studied in this thesis. READ MORE

  4. 14. Mechanisms of Antibiotic Resistance Evolution

    Author : Michael Knopp; Dan Andersson; Anca Segall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance evolution; Escherichia coli; Salmonella; porins; fitness; epistasis; strain-specificity; sub-MIC; de novo gene evolution;

    Abstract : The continuing emergence and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria are a threat to various applications in modern medicine and impose a strong economic burden on health systems. The development of new antibiotics is slow and cannot counterbalance the dissemination of resistant bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 15. Development requirements of neurotrophins in the mammalian nervous system

    Author : Wael M Elshamy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The survival of the mammalian peripheral nervous system neurons has long been known to depend on neurotrophic factor support during the period of programmed cell death. In fact this was the original hypothesis, put forward after the discovery of the prototype, nerve growth factor (NGF). READ MORE
