16. Antibiotic Resistance and the Cellular Currency S-adenosyl-methionine : Modification of aminoglycosides and nucleic acids
Abstract : Streptomycin and spectinomycin are antibiotics that bind to ribosomes and inhibit protein synthesis. Common resistance mechanisms involve enzymatic modification of the two drugs by aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs). The first part of this thesis covers the structural mechanism of two ANT enzymes. READ MORE

17. Computational discovery of antibiotic resistance genes and their horizontal transfer
Abstract : Antibiotic resistance is increasing among clinical infections and represents one of the most serious threats to public health. Pathogens often become resistant by acquiring mobile antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) via horizontal gene transfer (HGT). READ MORE

18. The diagnosis and protection of the auditory peripheral system
Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is on the diagnosis and prevention of peripheral hearing loss. An auditory evoked response measure (forward masking) was developed that specifically tests the function of the inner hair cells, independently of the outer hair cells. READ MORE

19. The Mechanism of translation termination in Escherichia coli
Abstract : Protein synthesis in E. coli is terminated by the release factors (RFs) and the ribosome is prepared for another round of protein synthesis by ribosome recycling factor (RRF), elongation factor G (EF-G) and initiation factor (IF3). READ MORE

20. Determinants of peptidyl-tRNA drop-off from E. coli Ribosomes : Effects of antibiotics, mutations and translation factors
Abstract : During protein synthesis, some peptidyl-tRNA molecules dissociate from the ribosomes and become hydrolysed by peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth). Two different in vitro systems, poly(U) and natural mRNA programmed ribosomes, have been used in order to determine dissociation (drop-off) rates of deacylated- and peptidyl-tRNAs from different sites on ribosomes.
