  1. 1. Antibiotic resistance gone wild : A One Health perspective on carriage, selection and transmission of Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporinase- and Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae

    Author : Clara Atterby; Josef D. Järhult; Nicola Williams; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; E. coli; K. pneumoniae; ESBL; AmpC; Carbapenemase; ciprofloxacin resistance; colistin resistance; rural; wildlife; birds; sub-MIC; MSC; Cambodia; environment; epidemiology; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they came into clinical use during the Second World War in the 1940s. Today, our effective use of antibiotics is under great threat due to emerging antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This thesis addresses the problems of antibiotic resistance from a ”One Health” perspective. READ MORE

  2. 2. Chromosomal β-lactamases in enterobacteria and in vivo evolution of β-lactam resistance

    Author : Sven Bergström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gram negative bacteria; ß-lactamase genes; divergence of neighbouring cperons; ß-lactamase hyperproduction; evolution of control sequences;

    Abstract : The ß-lactam antibiotics are the most important antibacterial agents in the treatment of infectious diseases. A severe problem in ß-lactam therapy is the emergence of ß-lactam resistant bacteria. Clinical ß-lactam resistance is most often due to the production of ß-lactamases. ß-lactamase genes reside either on plasmids or on the chromosome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on two bacterial resistance mechanisms to β-lactam antibiotics : extended spectrum β-lactamases in Klebsiella oxytoca and methicillin resistance in staphylococci

    Author : Shang Wei Wu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Eleven clinical isolates of Klebsiella oxytoca from Stockholm hospitals were found to be resistant to aztreonam and cefuroxime (MIC > 16 mg/L). The resistance was caused by a ß-lactamase with pI 5.25 and designated KH. Assay of the substrate profiles revealed that the KH ß-lactarnase was similar to the chromosomally encoded OXY-2 ß-lactamase. READ MORE

  4. 4. Antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacilli : with focus on cephalosporin resistance mechanisms in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae

    Author : Owe Källman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Objectives: The objectives of this thesis were to study mechanisms conferring cefuroxime resistance in clinical non-ESBL (extended-spectrum beta-lactamase) producing isolates of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, as well as the presence of co-resistance to other antibiotics in the K. pneumoniae isolates. 5. 5. Dissemination of Multiresistant Bacteria : Their Selection, Transmission, Virulence and Resistance

    Author : Gustaf Starlander; Åsa Melhus; Jørgen Vildershøj Bjørnholt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology;

    Abstract : Multiresistant bacteria are an emerging threat in modern medicine. Consumption of antimicrobial agents among humans, animals and in agriculture causes a selection of resistance genes. READ MORE
