  1. 1. The Amygdala, Fear and Reconsolidation : Neural and Behavioral Effects of Retrieval-Extinction in Fear Conditioning and Spider Phobia

    Author : Johannes Björkstrand; Mats Fredrikson; Emily Holmes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Fear conditioning; phobia; memory reconsolidation; retrieval-extinction; exposure therapy; amygdala; fMRI; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Abstract : The amygdala is crucially involved in the acquisition and retention of fear memories. Experimental research on fear conditioning has shown that memory retrieval shortly followed by pharmacological manipulations or extinction, thereby interfering with memory reconsolidation, decreases later fear expression. 2. 2. Overlapping Neural Substrates of Alcohol- and Anxiety-Related Behavior in the Rat

    Author : Riccardo Barchiesi; Estelle Barbier; Markus Heilig; Annika Thorsell; Andrew Holmes; Linköpings universitet; []

    Abstract : Alcohol use is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide. A large part of this disease burden is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD), a diagnostic category characterized by excessive use in spite of negative consequences ("compulsive use"), a loss of control over intake, and choice of alcohol over natural rewards. Abstract : Anxiety disorders are very common and the primary feature is abnormal or inappropriate anxiety. Fear and anxiety is often mediated by the amygdala, a brain structure rich in substance P (SP) and neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptors. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the influence of dopamine-related genetic variation on dopamine-related disorders

    Author : Olle Bergman; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : dopamine; neurodevelopment; amygdala; schizophrenia; Parkinson s disease; social anxiety disorder; ADHD; PITX3; LMX1A; LMX1B; BDNF; DAT; SNP; genes; genetics; BDNF;

    Abstract : Rationale: Dopamine synthesizing neurons are involved in a wide variety of functions. The most prominent dopamine pathways originate in the midbrain. The development, function and survival of these dopaminergic neurons are under the influence of numerous transcription and neurotrophic factors. READ MORE

  5. 5. Imaging brain aromatase by using PET : A way to study anabolic steroid abuse

    Author : Kayo Takahashi; Mats Bergström; Bengt Långström; Yasuyoshi Watanabe; Torbjörn Bäckström; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Aromatase is an enzyme that facilitates the conversion of androgens to estrogens and may play a role in mood and mental status. The main theme of this thesis is the imaging of brain aromatase by use of the PET technique. The PET tracer for aromatase, 11C-labeled vorozole (VOZ) was developed and evaluated by with in vitro and in vivo methods. READ MORE
