1. New methods for determination of airborne pollutants : Focus on tetrabromobisphenol A, organophosphate triesters and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns the development and evaluation of new methods of sampling and analysis of organic pollutants in the indoor and outdoor environment. In Paper I, the development of a new method was reported for the determination of the brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in air using sampling with glass fiber filter and polyurethane foam (PUF), ultrasonic solvent extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS). 2. Determination of biomarkers for lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress : Development of analytical techniques and methods
Abstract : Oxidative stress can be defined as a state of disturbance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in favour of the former, leading to potential damage. Processes associated with oxidative stress involve reactive oxygen species and radicals and can result in elevated levels of oxidatively modified or toxic molecules that can cause cellular malfunction, and even cell death. 3. Variance Reduction in Analytical Chemistry : New Numerical Methods in Chemometrics and Molecular Simulation
Abstract : This thesis is based on five papers addressing variance reduction in different ways. The papers have in common that they all present new numerical methods. READ MORE

4. Characterisation of starch: development of analytical methods
Abstract : Starch, comprised of amylose and amylopectin, is a very complex biopolymer. Different methods are therefore needed for the investigation of the molecular structures of amylose and amylopectin. In this thesis analytical methods have been developed and various techniques were combined for the characterisation of starch. READ MORE

5. Electrochemical Aspects of Miniaturized Analytical Platforms
Abstract : This thesis ties some electrochemical aspects of development and fabrication of an analytical system on a microchip together. These aspects develop through the fundamentals of amperometric detection in microsystems and microfabrication via the interaction of electrochemical detection and electrophoretic separation finally to the interfacing of a microsystem to the macro world.
