  1. 16. Cardiovascular response to hyperoxemia, hemodilution and burns : a clinical and experimental study

    Author : Zoltan Bak; Birgitta Janerot Sjöberg; Robert Hahn; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anesthesia; general; Burns; Echocardiography; transesophageal; Hemodilution; emodynamic processes; Hyperoxia; Intensive care; Intensivvård;

    Abstract : The last decades less invasive monitoring and analytical tools have been developed for the evaluation of myocardial mechanics in clinical praxis. In critical care, these are longed-for complements to pulmonary artery catheter monitoring, additionally offering previously inaccessible information. READ MORE

  2. 17. Acute Confusional State in Elderly Patients with Hip Fracture. Identification of risk factors and intervention using a prehospital and perioperative management program

    Author : Karin Björkman Björkelund; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; postoperative confusion; mortality; pain; fasting; hypoxemia; complications; ASA; Anemia; transfusion.; anesthesia;

    Abstract : Abstract The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about underlying causes and perioperative risk factors of Acute Confusional State (ACS) in elderly patients with hip fracture and to investigate the effect of a multi-factorial intervention program in order to decrease the number of patients who develop ACS. The aim in paper I was to describe elderly patients with hip fracture on the basis of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ ASA classification system and to identify preoperative risk factors in relation to the postoperative outcome measured up to 4-months after surgery. 3. 18. Ventilation/Perfusion Matching and its Effect on Volatile Pharmacokinetics

    Author : Moritz Andreas Kretzschmar; Anders Larsson; Jan Jakobsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anesthesia; Animal models in research; Mass spectrometry; Gas chromatography; MIGET; Ventilation-perfusion; Desflurane; Isoflurane; Bronchoconstriction; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : The mismatching of alveolar ventilation and perfusion (VA/Q) is the major determinant of impaired gas exchange. The gold standard for analyzing VA/Q distribution is the multiple inert gas elimination technique (MIGET), conventionally based on gas chromatography (GC), and, although simple in principle, a technically demanding procedure limiting its use. 4. 19. Acupuncture in Obstetrics and Anaesthesia

    Author : Nina Kvorning; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anestesiologi; intensivvård; auditory evoked potentials; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; sevoflurane; surgery; minimal alveolar concentration; inhalation; electric stimulation; obstetrics; delivery; childbirth; tender points; maternaty care; anesthesia; analgesia; labor; pregnancy; acupuncture; pain;

    Abstract : The aims of the present thesis (I-V) were to evaluate the analgesic and adverse effects of manual acupuncture for low-back and pelvic pain during pregnancy (I) and for labour pain (II-III), and also to study the effects of low-frequency electro acupuncture (EA) on clinical physiological responses to skin incision in anaesthetized patients (IV-V). Acupuncture in obstetric patients (I-III) Manual acupuncture in obstetric patients was found to relieve pain in one prospective randomised (I) and two retrospective (II-III) studies. READ MORE

  5. 20. Effects of lung-protective ventilation on microbial growth and inflammatory biomarkers in experimental sepsis

    Author : Axel Nyberg; Markus Castegren; Kristofer Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anesthesia; intensive care;

    Abstract : Sepsis is a severe disease state characterised by a dysregulated host response to infection. The need for mechanical ventilation is common in the sepsis population, for primarily pulmonary reasons or as a result of other organ dysfunction. READ MORE
