  1. 16. Syndecan-1 insights in mesothelioma

    Author : Ghazal Heidari-Hamedani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Syndecan-1 is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan expressing on epithelial cells. Heparan sulfate (HS) chains on syndecan-1 constitute growth factor attachment sites and facilitate growth factors to bind their respective receptors. This binding property of HS chains allows syndecan-1 to be involved in various cellular processes. READ MORE

  2. 17. Examining the prostate stroma and vasculature : importance and potential as targets for therapy

    Author : Anna Johansson; Anders Bergh; Arne Östman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; castration therapy; vasculature; stroma; the angiopoietins; the PDGF-receptors; mast cells; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Background. Recent studies in cancer research have focused on the reciprocal interaction between cancer cells and their microenvironment. Tumour growth is angiogenesis dependent and the rate of angiogenesis correlates with a poor prognosis in many different cancers. READ MORE

  3. 18. Endogenous and exogenous factors affecting lipoprotein lipase activity

    Author : Mikael Larsson; Gunilla Olivecrona; Aivar Lookene; Ira Tabas; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LPL; APOC1; APOC2; APOC3; ANGPTL4; enzyme inactivation; lipoprotein metabolism; triglycerides; fatty acids; hypertriglyceridemia; CVD; small molecule screening; structure-activity relationship; cardiovascular disease; hjärt- och kärlforskning;

    Abstract : Individuals with high levels of plasma triglycerides are at high risk to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD), currently one of the major causes of death worldwide. Recent epidemiological studies show that loss-of-function mutations in the APOC3 gene lower plasma triglyceride levels and reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease. READ MORE

  4. 19. Host-microbe interactions : gut microbiota and its effects on developmental programming of the brain, placenta and testis

    Author : Maha Al-Asmakh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Reproduction of a mammalian organism involves inherited genetic programming and environmental factors that collectively shape organ development and function in the new offspring. One such factor are the indigenous microbiota and their interactions with the host. READ MORE

  5. 20. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair

    Author : Mallappa K. Kolar; Lev N. Novikov; Paul J. Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Elisabet Åkesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; mesenchymal stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction.
